I've had strabismus since I was born. if antone should be offended, it's me. yet I'm not. I don't get the whole big deal about it

I think this issue is the same you get with any word that can be considered an -ist slur - everyone has different experiences (or lack of them) with the word, so it effects people differently. For some people, they've been called names meant to dehumanise them since they were children simply because they have a disability, and "derpy" may be one of those insults. So they associate the word strongly with people treating them like shit for having a disability. So it's always awesome if an individual isn't offended by the word because they don't have any negative experiences with it or they do have negative experiences with it but, for whatever reason, it doesn't effect them strongly. Yay for not being offended or hurt, because being offended or hurt by something like that sucks. But that doesn't mean that there aren't other people who are effected by the word, who are upset and offended by it because of their experiences. The second group shouldn't be dismissed or told they're being "too sensitive" or any of the other phrases that get tossed around in these conversations, just because the first group exists.

I don't think the word 'derp'/'derpy' was even around until a couple years ago. I think it's an internet subculture thing.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
it was in an older episode of south park, actually. and it literally had nothing to do with disability.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, but is considered to be an ableist word by SJW though. IIRC (and that's a large if), derp came from South Park (? don't know--never watched SP in my entire life but I've it explained this way before) and was used by a disabled character to mock (?) the disabled. Since it was, it's an ableist slur now.

Feel free to correct me on this, SJW. IDGAF about whether it's a slur or not. I just hate how the word sounds in my head when I read it and won't be using it b/c of that.

No, the etymologies of "Derp" have nothing to do with disability. It was first used in South Park here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_staff_at_South_Park_Elementary#Mr._Derp

to denote a character who was the embodiment of silly, predictable slapstick (much like Derpy).

[identity profile] ginpenguin.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to be a fairly adamant SJW and I honestly never have felt the term 'Derp' or the derivatives there of were ableist. I followed the idea that the word was coined by South Park, and was intended as a stand in for 'silly' or 'clumsy'. I sometimes use it myself in place of being forgetful or neglecting to realize the obvious in something. On a similar note, my issue with the entirety of the MLP fandom going to war over this episode is this : If the term was so offensive, and going to cause so much hate and animosity, rather than waiting until the writers called the wall eyed character 'Derpy Hooves' as a nod to us, why didn't we say something when the term first started as a fan name? Any SJW worth their salt wouldn't wait that long, I would hope.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
People did say something. And they were pretty much shouted down and told they were oversensitive. Kind of the same way that anyone who felt that the term "brony" implicitly excluded women to any degree was shouted down, or anyone who brought up concerns over the racism in Over A Barrel got shouted down. I love MLP:FiM fandom something fierce, but it can get really ugly really fast when issues of privilege come up.

[identity profile] ginpenguin.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I must have missed that, admittedly, since while I enjoy the show and follow some of the fan art blogs, it hasn't ever been something I focused on that intently. I'm honestly not sure where I stand in the argument.

^This pretty much explains why I'm often frustrated with the "Brony" community, despite how much I adore the show and the creators behind it
