I don't think that was the point. I think that's perfectly okay and reasonable. I think OP's point was that if you don't have a disability and found it offensive, you should back up and let the people who it is actually affecting have a voice.

To be honest, I'm sort of disabled (since not everyone seems to agree on whether Asperger's Syndrome is really a disability or not), and I don't have any issue with Derpy/Ditzy/whatever you want to call her. Really, I think there are a lot worse things they could've done with her, and I think a lot of people are getting worked up over something that's, in my opinion, not really a big deal at all.

I don't watch MLP, but I saw a clip of the char in question and I thought she was just clumsy.

I thought it was cute, nothing about her struck me as offensive. (I'm learning now that "derp" is deemed ableist, though)

I mostly thought she was cute in that clip, mostly because goddamn I have this tendency to bump into things (mostly corners. I guess I turn too close and I hit corners like daily)

Hahahaha oh man what were they thinking calling her "Derpy" in the actual show? Accusations of it being an ableist slur aside, it's just a fucking horrible pony name. Ditzy Doo, Bright Eyes, or even Bubbles would have been so much better TBH.

"Ditzy" sounds more offensive than "Derpy" IMO! I'm just wondering how many people would've been butthurt if her name WAS Ditzy because she's blonde and the whole "Blondes are ditzy" stereotype. I think that would've been worse! I kinda wish she just hadn't been named at all.

Man, it bothers me when people make 'derp/derpy' an ablesist thing. It's a term that's been around for quite some time, and I think South Park popularized it. (It may have been in Baseketball too but it's been years since I've seen it.) 'Derp' originated, I'm pretty sure, as a sort of self-depreciating term, something you say and kind of roll your eyes at yourself when you mess up or do something silly. Like a self-facepalm, really. So it's pretty appropriate that a clumsy but well-intentioned character is named Derpy. It's kind of a goofy name, of course, and sure Ditzy would have fit too, but I've never once seen it as some ableist term. My derpy little cat and I would love to know where that came from.

I am amazed at the amount of people who rage over terminology, and what does or does not count as offensive, or "abelist". It has been my personal experience, that the vast majority of people who become most offend by "abelist language", turn out to have no kind of disability (physical or mental) themselves whatsoever. I myself have Cerebral Palsy and use a wheelchair, on top of several other things. Oy. I do refer to myself as a "cripple", and yes I've even called myself "derpy." [I get muscle spasms that sometimes affect my face] Whenever I use these words to refer to myself, the ~only~ people who take offense, are those who are not disabled. While those friends I have that are themselves disable, never even bat an eyelash. My disabled friends are right there, laughing along, and making fun of themselves as well.

I have no idea what everyone was freaking out about. I got the impression she was simply clumsy (and didn't know her own strength when sitting down). Being clumsy isn't a mental disorder: dyspraxia is, but I have a friend who's dispraxic and he wouldn't find a cute, clumsy pony offensive. Although I guess I could see why some more sensitive could, but there was no hint that Derpy was indeed dyspraxic. I didn't find anything wrong with her voice, either.

Now we'll never get a cute Derpy scene again because the fandom ruined everything. That's what you get if you pander to the fans, it seems. I thought the scene was a really cute nod to the periphery demographic, but some people are just never happy.

This was such a huge issue on Tumblr (one of the places where social justice and discussions about things like ableism are very present). Although I can understand why people may have found the combination of Derpy's name, looks and Forest Gump-y sort of speaking offensive, I do think that nowadays people should back-up and mellow out a bit.

There have been silly/clumsy/stupid/slow cartoon characters since the dawn of cartoon time. In my opinion, Derpy was a bit of a pony-fied version of Dopey (another name that is now iffy if you consider the rise of 'ableist slurs'). Clumsy and unfortunate, but still trying to be earnest and helpful. Same goes for Goofy or Stimpy or Ed from Ed, Edd 'n Eddy and many others. I have yet to find an article or a blog post where Dopey or Goofy is considered harmful or offensive or a bad example to children (the latter being a reason why people had such a problem with Derpy since MLP is a show that is supposed to teach children things). Could be that I am not looking in the right place.
