Man, it bothers me when people make 'derp/derpy' an ablesist thing. It's a term that's been around for quite some time, and I think South Park popularized it. (It may have been in Baseketball too but it's been years since I've seen it.) 'Derp' originated, I'm pretty sure, as a sort of self-depreciating term, something you say and kind of roll your eyes at yourself when you mess up or do something silly. Like a self-facepalm, really. So it's pretty appropriate that a clumsy but well-intentioned character is named Derpy. It's kind of a goofy name, of course, and sure Ditzy would have fit too, but I've never once seen it as some ableist term. My derpy little cat and I would love to know where that came from.

This. Honestly the way people jump on things these days with this politically-correct madness mindset just makes me want to throw a brick at my computer sometimes. Just because a character is portrayed as goofy doesn't mean they're mentally disabled. For Pete's sake, I bet people would raise a stink these days about, saw, Screwy Squirrel if he was debuted in this day and age, because surely he'd offend somebody with his ~possibly mentally unstable~ antics.

This. And the suggestion that it does is far more offensive than giving a pony a name that has fuck all to do with disability anyway.

I actually have way less of a problem with her being named "Derpy" than I do with the fact that everyone writes her as perpetually "charmingly" clumsy and ineffectual, and then the show decided to take it there, too. I know it's a thing, but seriously, guys, constantly walking into things and tripping over nothing isn't "cute" or "goofy." It fucking sucks, because you end up with bruises everywhere and sometimes more serious injuries, and you always have to buy the very cheapest phone/MP3 player/coffee cup/whatever you can find because you will drop it and break it, possibly within the next couple hours, and then people treat it like it's some charming character trait to be laughed at and, dude, no.

I don't think all those people making macros of retarded people and people in wheelchairs with DERP DERP DERP on them were doing it to show someone doing silly.

Right? People use it in an ableist way, can we not get upset about that?
