But what if you DO have a disability and issues with with the character? As some people do (I don't know how many - I don't really follow the fandom).

I don't think that was the point. I think that's perfectly okay and reasonable. I think OP's point was that if you don't have a disability and found it offensive, you should back up and let the people who it is actually affecting have a voice.

OP here and yeah, pretty much. Specifically, I've ran into fanworks that, while the people writing them might not know or use the word "ableism", wrote about it pretty well. I've seen people who don't necessarily know certain things happening in real life hear about them through fic about this character and hear that they really happen and get angry about it. If you have a disability and you have a problem with it? Your opinions are yours and that isn't my place to judge. But people coming in from SJ who aren't personally affected and who are going in with these guidelines of "this is okay"/"this isn't" without really understanding why... I think they're missing a piece of this? Because if you can get people to get angry about things that are actually pretty horrible but most people just don't really think about, then I see that as doing more good than harm.

You aren't personally affected so why are you going on about it? Stop being so angry and defensive when it doesn't even affect you.

Idk. Like, I get the whole 'if this doesn't affect you personally, shut up for a second' thing, because too many times I've seen discusses strictly about and FOR the party affected being hijacked by (most commonly) white people who have never even gone through the event in question

I understand the desire for some people to step the fuck back and let the oppressed party talk, instead of talking over them since they get enough of that in daily life.

You know what they say about "when you assume." Well, sorta. The things I have are usually considered disabilities, but aren't in the same group of disabilities that's being discussed here. (I'm mentally ill.) I've had the experience of "allies" that came in from SJ deciding what needs to be offensive to me (usually certain words, etc) while completely ignoring the actually terrible things that have happened to me and other people because we were deemed "crazy people". On the scale of awful, the things that these people decide to talk about are pretty low. And I've seen a bunch of times where people who didn't have mental illnesses snapped at people who did just because the wrong words were used. "Don't listen to crazy people, they can't make decisions for themselves" is a thing so it gets me really angry.

I've heard about this happening with the Derpy issue. People getting together to talk about it, and fans with disabilities getting talked over by not-disabled SJWs.... about what things count as ableism and how people should react to it. I don't know all the details- whether the only people with disabilities present disagreed about Derpy, or whether there was a range of opinions but the not-disabled SJWs brought it on themselves to police what's ok for disabled people to say. And I think "don't listen to disabled people, they can't make decisions for themselves" seems to be a thing no matter what kind of disability people are talking about.

So while there IS overlap, I'm aware there's a difference. But I do have the experience of being told by people who do not share my problems that I need to react to my problems in a certain way, and it gets me angry when that happens to others because it's a really demeaning thing. I don't want to tell people who have different problems than me how to react to them- I just am pissed as fuck at anyone being talked over and spoken for.
