His parents owned a publishing company. Unlike most authors, who spent months or even years trying to get someone to even take a second glance at their novel, Paolini got his right away because of that.

He did complete two whole novels, yes. Which was hard work. But he didn't grind his fingers to the bone editing, rewriting, making it polished. Mommy and daddy sent it out as soon as he finished it. (Judging by all the contradicitons and errors made in Eragon, I don't think he spent much time planning them either.) It was pure luck that it got big.

Paolini is also a pompous assface due to his sucess. Ask anyone who's seen him at a book signing or whatever, and they'll probably tell you the same thing as I just said. Maybe I would have a shred of respect for him even if he didn't have a hard time finding a publisher (because come on, if you had that chance you'd take it), but I can't excuse his behaviour.

... :( Well, damn. I wouldn't have said anything if I'd known someone was going to beat me to it and say what I wanted to better than I did.

Also, I didn't know the stuff about him being an ass at book signings, but it really doesn't surprise me. (And it's one more reason to rag on him with impunity, so yay for that.)
