Speaking as somebody with a connection to the court system, a lot of criminals think of it as a last resort. More people steal for necessity than for "fun."

While we're generalizing, can we also say more people think non-necessities are necessities than not? 'Cause I'm pretty sure you don't really need that shiny electronic/fashion item d'jour. And even if they just sell it for cash, what would they buy?

Oh, I didn't mean "necessity" as in "the criminals needed the things they were stealing." What I meant was that they're normally compelled to steal for unglamorous reasons (income, food, drugs), rather than just for a rush. For example -- and I could be wrong here -- your brother most likely stole for cigarettes and alcohol due to an addiction, right?

Um. Speaking from experience, crime is a fuckload of fun. Not necessarily morally right, but have you ever been chased through a car park away from a wheezing security guard after spray painting the entire lower floor a shade of bright pink? Fun as all hell.
