oh bb, please get some perspective. crime is a lot of things, but it sure as hell isn't "fun"

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
In real life going to prison tends to be a huge down side to "stealing stuff."

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that the point of the secret? That OP knows it wouldn't be like that, but Parker makes it look fun.

Um. Speaking from experience, crime is a fuckload of fun. Not necessarily morally right, but have you ever been chased through a car park away from a wheezing security guard after spray painting the entire lower floor a shade of bright pink? Fun as all hell.

Nope. When you steal, you're not stealing from the 'authorities'. You're stealing from normal people, and the authorities are just trying to protect their rights. (At least that's what they're supposed to be doing.) Every time you steal, somebody gets into trouble. (Seriously, if you shoplift from a store, who do you think is gonna pay for that? Because somebody will be paying for that in one way or another, usually someone non-deserving.)

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
This, exactly. I'm not saying there's never any reason to break rules, but (on serious rule-breaking in general, not just shoplifting and not just lawbreaking):

1) Know who's going to pay for it before you do it (and remember that if you fail, that person paying for it is YOU.)

2) Make sure whoever that is is someone deserving of what you're doing to them, and not some underling of the Big Bad whose eye you're spitting in. Odds are the spit will never reach the god's eye anyway.

3) Remember that the situation in which anyone actually is deserving is rare and serious. Try your best to exhaust other options before you do what you plan to do.

The vast majority of "I'm gonna break the rules" is, sadly, not about challenging systems that need to be challenged and cannot be worked with, circumvented, or changed (or smashed!) from inside, but about wanting to feel cool.

Sigh. :-/

I've worked in retail, and they actually figure in a certain % of shoplifting to the budget and orders. So you could argue that the store's expecting it anyway and in some cases nobody will really pay.

This is the kind of argument that justifies capitalism (excl. smaller shops). If you shoplift from a large chain, who are you going to harm? The executives that've been stuffing their pockets? The hideous markups from where the original clothes have been made in China by children? These stores need to go down.

I'd totally do that if I had only 24 hours to live.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I have low to non-existent impulse control and I've been shoplifting for pretty much my entire life (I'm 24). I've never been caught, but I've never stolen from any place where I'm likely to be jumped on (although I have been chased twice - once by a security guard, once by a stall owner). Stealing is a rush for me, as I suppose it is for you, and my replacement rushes are far more exciting than shoplifting. Try extreme sports like free running (it's just as exciting to nick something for me as it is trying to get on the roof of my local mall). It sounds as if you're looking for excitement rather than the items themselves.

(Worth noting that low impulse control leads itself heavily to addictions, so watch out for drugs on any scale. Almost got kicked out of college for dealing, but that's a story for another day.)

Unpopular opinion about shoplifting:

So many clothing chains produce their clothes in third world countries where there are no minimum wages, no restrictions on working hours, no unions, no environmental regulations that stop them releasing toxins into rivers other people drink from, no health and safety laws, no nothing. Morally speaking, I'm not convinced that buying their clothes is actually better than stealing their clothes.

To all of the folks who think shoplifting is valid means of protesting against unfair and cruel labor practices: it most certainly isn't. The from corporation to factory to store is more complex than "hurt a little bit of their profit and they'll respond" entails: for the most part, garment corporations outsource production to independent factories abroad, which are only loosely bound by local laws and the corporations' own informal "codes of conduct" -- so the link between lost profits on the sales floor and labor conditions at the factory is fairly thin. Moreover, corporate executives have no idea that you're stealing from them because they abuse their workers abroad, so your "protest" comes across as a weak excuse for wanting to get cheap stuff without technically being a part of the harmful global supply chain.

If you really want to make a stand against the corporations, you ought to complain to them directly and spread the word about their labor practices around. Get more people upset about it!

Gratuitous icon post.

But seriously, don't steal. The corporations and authorities aren't the ones who suffer when you steal; it's the people at the bottom who do.

Wow @ some of these people. Most people don't see stealing as a good thing, so if you're shoplifting in order to protest capitalism or whatever, aren't you weakening your argument? "I'll wear clothes made by abused, underpaid, child labor, but I sure as heck won't BUY it!" isn't really a good argument either.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
When I said 'giving the authorities a big middle finger', I didn't mean I was trying to get justice to those they screw over. I just meant that I want to do the opposite of the norm, I want to go against the grain.

And mostly, because some stores make it look so easy to do so! Most stores barely think twice if the alarm at the door goes off because it is so faulty to begin with (I've had it go off when I've walked into stores). The employees just wave me through; they don't even bother to check. So what's to stop me from slipping something else in there with whatever I purchased?

Like Parker said in one episode, she stole the Hope Diamond and then put it back. Just because she was bored and wanted to do it. Well, that's what I want to do! I don't need to steal stuff (I have enough money to support my needs); I just want to do it for the rush.

I understand the feeling, OP. Most I've stolen in my life was a few eaten grapes at the grocery store when I was kid, but Hollywood sure knows how to make thieves look sexy. Well, thieves and everything else, and of course most thieves in RL aren't using complicated harnesses and aerobatics and sexy-but-practical-seeming outfits. But anyway, "jewel thief" in particular still just has all kinds of sexy, thrilling connotations to it. :)

Parker made me want acrobatic abilities- I would love to be able to scale a building and be like 'what? This is how I roll.'

Hey OP -- this thread has taken an uber serious turn for the serious.

As a massive stalkerishlymassive fan of the show and of Parker -- I'm right there with you. She makes it look fun and exciting, and every time she steals something I want to take up yoga/pilates/etc on the chance that I need to sneak in somewhere like she does. For the record, this 'need' has not arisen yet.

I know that I won't steal anything and I know that I am not going to do it, but there is the brief fantasy that I could. And that it would be fun.
