This, exactly. I'm not saying there's never any reason to break rules, but (on serious rule-breaking in general, not just shoplifting and not just lawbreaking):

1) Know who's going to pay for it before you do it (and remember that if you fail, that person paying for it is YOU.)

2) Make sure whoever that is is someone deserving of what you're doing to them, and not some underling of the Big Bad whose eye you're spitting in. Odds are the spit will never reach the god's eye anyway.

3) Remember that the situation in which anyone actually is deserving is rare and serious. Try your best to exhaust other options before you do what you plan to do.

The vast majority of "I'm gonna break the rules" is, sadly, not about challenging systems that need to be challenged and cannot be worked with, circumvented, or changed (or smashed!) from inside, but about wanting to feel cool.

Sigh. :-/

This is an excellent comment and you should feel good.

Thank you! *feels good*

THIS.
Much of the time, trying to "stick it to the The Man" often ends up hurting everyone BUT The Man (becasue The Man has dealt with this before, and knows how to work around it).

Yeah, exactly. I remember hanging with some people a while back who were really into protest marches, bragging about how they'd throw bricks through windows of Corporate Nemesis Of The Day. I was just like "dude, even if I agreed 100% with you that Corporate Nemesis is pure fucking evil, what exactly do you think that did?"

(Yes, I know not everyone who protests pulls this kind of crap, so just forestalling people taking it that way. And yes, I do think sometimes violent protest can be called for. Wanting high-fives from your bros for daring to throw a brick through a window isn't that.)

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that seems like a pretty lame "accomplishment"... sheesh.

[identity profile] lilya7.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'll see it as a big accomplishment the day windows spontaneusly grow glass hands, grab the brick and throw it back at them.

Not gonna lie, this is one of the reasons the 'Occupy' movements in the two cities I commute between had me so annoyed. The protesters were more a nuisance for those of us everyday people trying to go about our lives than they were for the government or the rich or whomever they were protesting against.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I lean pretty far to the left, and I still can't find myself getting behind the Occupy movement 100%...

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I'm the same way. Them trashing up our parks and disrupting traffic (both street and foot) doesn't warm me up to their cause either.

I think that's the thing though, if it's the 99%? That represents essentially everyone. And when does everyone agress politically? I think it's more about getting behind the movement of: we need more of a voice, more respect, and to find ways around eroding our quality of life. It`s a different kind of movement than ones we`ve had in the past, it`s not about a specific issue, or just one specific cause. It`s about society, and the direction that we`re taking. It does trickle down to specific and concrete things, and plans, and issues, but the uniting factor is much higher up.

That be my view of the whole thing anyways.
