1) Know who's going to pay for it before you do it (and remember that if you fail, that person paying for it is YOU.)
2) Make sure whoever that is is someone deserving of what you're doing to them, and not some underling of the Big Bad whose eye you're spitting in. Odds are the spit will never reach the god's eye anyway.
3) Remember that the situation in which anyone actually is deserving is rare and serious. Try your best to exhaust other options before you do what you plan to do.
The vast majority of "I'm gonna break the rules" is, sadly, not about challenging systems that need to be challenged and cannot be worked with, circumvented, or changed (or smashed!) from inside, but about wanting to feel cool.
Sigh. :-/

THIS.
Much of the time, trying to "stick it to the The Man" often ends up hurting everyone BUT The Man (becasue The Man has dealt with this before, and knows how to work around it).

(Yes, I know not everyone who protests pulls this kind of crap, so just forestalling people taking it that way. And yes, I do think sometimes violent protest can be called for. Wanting high-fives from your bros for daring to throw a brick through a window isn't that.)

That be my view of the whole thing anyways.

No business EVER just sucks up a loss. That shit always gets passed on to consumers in one way or another.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 03:17 am (UTC)(link)I work in a large chain store. I'm working in the cash office now, counting the money for deposit, but I used to be a cashier. I had no idea until I started working in the office but cashiers don't get in trouble from being over or short the amount of money the computer says they are supposed to have unless it is more or less than five dollars. So the whole time I was a cashier, I could have taken one dollar from my register each shift and never gotten in trouble. When working five days a week, I would have made an extra five bucks a week and the store would not have cared!
See why I say it is so tempting to steal?!
