I get you OP. If most of your life is centered on the internet (I work in the net. Stay at home a lot.) you get a skewed sense of reality based on where you hang. Some places present as very anti-female but actually really aren't and often when presented with a female they turn into a bunch of courters trying to impress. I'd assume it's sometimes the opposite as a man. Even if you never say what you are it's still feels like they're judging you and can be upsetting if you can't separate stupid shit said on the internet from real life.

I tend to want to stay in male oriented places because female "safe spaces" are too god damn restricting and anal retentive about everything. (And in fandom, too obsessed with slash for my comfort.)
