Even though I don't really go on Neopets anymore, I'm still so attached to mine. I have to put them in a good Neolodge room every month so I know they don't have their little sad faces, even when I'm not logged in.
I can definitely understand this, OP, though I don't think I'm too worried about anyone bothering to take my account. (Not many people really knew me on there, so they'd have to be actively checking random usernames.)

Is there a problem with hacking there? I've had my Neopets account for 9 1/2 years and never had a problem, but I haven't been active in ages. My stupid Gaia Online accounts on the other hands. I had a few months there where I was receiving emails every day because some idiots were trying to strongarm their way into basically every early account there was. Ugh.

Iirc, Neopets been hacked several times, though the staff doesn't want to acknowledge it. There was also a day where some of the code for the website broke, and people found themselves randomly logged in to other people's accounts. (And this is not even counting the numerous cookie grabbers and keyloggers and scammers you can find on the site. There seems to be a cookie grabber outbreak every few months.)

In short, they really need to fix their security.

I used to be a bit paranoid about getting my accounts hacked or scammed on Neopets. Then I got frozen for things I didn't do--twice--and lost all but one of my favorite pets.

It wasn't the end of the world. Yes, I was rather angry and bitter for a few months, mostly over the way the staff treated me when I tried to get my accounts back. Yes, I still miss the pets that I lost. But I've mostly gotten over it. When it comes down to it, Neopets are just pixels. If you're attached to the characters you developed for them, you can always continue to write about them in fanfic, re-create the pets on another pet site, etc.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are bigger things to worry about, in the grand scheme of things.

It was a sad day when I tried to log into my old account that I had since I was ten and it had been deleted. :( Bye bye, Bubblegum, my Faerie Aisha, Claween, my Halloween Kougra, and Efreet, my lab-test Eyrie.

*sniffles* I WAS ONE PIECE AWAY FROM COMPLETING THE LAB MAP!

...Er, sorry. But yeah, damn that timer they set into it. Leave a game alone for two or three years... *grumbles*

Neopets should be fine hacking wise. If you are really worried, try rotating passwords on a weekly basis.

But while there is a neopets secret... Does anyone miss the old neopets, when there was a new neopet at least every couple of months, neopoints were a lot easier to make, and paintbrushes were a hella cheaper? Inflation has set in and I find whenever I try to play now that it is just more stressful because to get all the cool stuff takes a lot more work then it used to... But maybe I am remembering it wrong. (seriously, I remember earning insane amounts of NP on the old Bullseye game.)

I've abandoned my Neopets, like, at least three times.
I can't help it, I always forget either the login name or the password. And I always feel really bad about it, because I have this (irrational) guilt that makes me think the pets feel like they've been abandoned (I'd go back to them if I could). I think my earliest Neopets account has been sitting in the dark for 10 years now... A sad, sad thought.

My account got hacked T-T I had stopped playing for about 2 years and when I tried to get back in... NUUUUUU. Took a couple of months until they admitted it and let me in. Lost 2 pets, but found one in the pound which made me happy. Not so happy about the damn hacker taking all my neopoints (On the down side I lost 10million, on the plus side I seem to have a 95% win ratio in the battledome...)
