OK fandom secrets. Y'all got me started on this Mark Watches Buffy thing, and I have to say, he's not as irritating as some of you made it seem. His commenters OTH, oh my god, some of them are absolutely ridiculous.

Take for example, the person who just said Willow saying Buffy was "the real Slayer" was racist? And could never seem to explain why, beyond her own assertion that if Kendra had been white, there would have been no need for Willow to say it? Ridic.

Which brings me to my point. Am I the only one sick to death of all the times "Unfortunate Implications!" gets trotted out? Because, yes, some things DO have unfortunate implications, but I can't help but feel like a lot of what goes on is less about what's being implied and more about what's being inferred. And THAT'S on the person doing the inferring and rushing to judgment (seemingly because they're too damn miserable to see anything but the worst in everything).

Here's an example of an unfortunate implication: Xander's wounded pride over Buffy getting rid of Larry in Halloween followed by his own gratified takedown of Pirate!Larry later in the episode has the unfortunate implication that fighting, outcome bedamned, is a rite of passage for "real men" (and anyone who chooses not to fight isn't a man). I'm sure there are also many unfortunate implications regarding women, but this is the first thing that came to mind (omg, does that make me sexist?!)

Here's an example of an unfortunate inferrence: Buffy encourages Kendra to fly back to wherever on a plane -- in a seat, while watching and eating peanuts. The message MUST be that Kendra is some sort of backwater idiot because she's a foreign person of color! Racist!

What really happened: Kendra, who has never had much time for fun, arrived stowed away in a cargo hold because she wanted to keep her identity secret. Buffy encourages her to relax a little. The implication? Kendra's wound a little tight, and probably doesn't need to be. Does that have anything to do with her nationality? No. Her race? No. Her upbringing? Yeah. But by no means did the rest of the episode imply she was some severely messed up person because of it. She's just...wound a little tight...and just about everybody could use a person to point things out like that from time to time.

Thoughts?

I can't stand them because they dogpile on people who use the word "crazy" without even explaining why they don't want people to use it. I could see if they were using "retarded," but "crazy"? Really? I get that there are people who take issue with it, but come on.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I still use the word "retarded" because most of the people who argue against it don't feel the need to stop using words like "crazy" and "insane" and "lame".

So I feel absolutely no remorse about using "retarded".

Hypocritical retards.

I'm fucking surprised anyone in this place has friends IRL because everyone is so fucking sensitive and quick to take shit out of context and blow shit up to epic (ridiculous) proportions. You can't say anything without someone taking it the wrong way and jumping on your shit like they've never had it before.

Every little fucking thing makes you a bigot, anti-feminist, racist, sexist, misogynistic, misandrist[ic], misanthropic, homophobic, a closet pedophile, a rape supporter/apologist, a blasphemer/satanist,pro-murder, anti-American (or wherever the fuck), anti-choice, anti-mentally retarded people, ageist, other -ists, discriminator of everything you can think of, anti fucking Oprah... fucking fuck, man.

there's a reason I have dropped out of fandoms all together.

you can't put a foot down without someone accusing you of something 'insensitive'.

Original commenter:

Dudes! I just watched the Xander love-spell episode, and I loved that Mark loved it. Then some commenter had t go shit all over it with her indignant rage and I remember again why I always mean to skip the comments. And I was bummed Mark never responded.

I didn't want him to change his mind or to try to make her change hers, but I have this overwhelming sense that this is one of those "Oh, I'm not a girl so I'm not allowed to talk about what the girls are talking about!" bullshit. And THAT I hate.
