The fic in question: Below Skyscrapers (http://deancastiel.livejournal.com/1849863.html) - Cas is a total badass. And pretty cranky. It's awesome.

Also, I forgot about these, but there's this fic (http://deancas-xmas.livejournal.com/43885.html) (Dean and Cas are both cops) and this one (http://deancastiel.livejournal.com/2772900.html#cutid1) (Prohibition-era fic where Cas is a PI & ex-cop and Dean is a former bootlegger) as well. Both are excellent.
