I like that it was subtle and underplayed. It's why Tinker Tailor was so popular when it came out, because it provided a more 'realistic' spy option to the wish fulfillment fantasy of James Bond. When you watch it, it's almost like the director is letting you see everything absolutely objectively, allowing you to put the pieces together yourself.

...But definitely not annoyed enough to employ any bathtub fantasies. :)
Oh man, whenever you DO get around to it, I hope you enjoy it so much.

As I said, I like it, but I do see why this story works best as a novel. There's a lot going on inside the characters but they're all hiding what they think & feel which makes it hard to become emotional attached to anyone. Which is possibly why so many people seem to have latched onto that one guy in that one scene about that one other guy. The book is on my To Read List then I want to watch the movie again. I think I'll get a lot more out of it that way.

Actually I thought the movie did a really good job of distinguishing Esterhase from Bland from Control from Hayden from Alleline from Tarr. The only character I had trouble distinguishing was [SPOILERS] Prideaux, and that was because for a while I thought he'd died.
