[Phantom of the Opera]

(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely alw was tool and I squirmed for him during his speech and Hadley kicked ass as raoul !

[identity profile] araminta18.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hadley was AWESOME!!!! And yes, I'm also in the boat of shipping Raoul/Christine just because of Hadley's awesome performance. I've never before liked or been a fan of Raoul...

[identity profile] aachren.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've not seen this performance, but I read the book years ago and that makes me a Raoul/Christine shipper. Eric was a creepy fuck in the book.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Hadley was amazing in the role too. However, I had the opposite reaction. I had never shipped Phantom/Christine before seeing this (still don't but I did soften quite a bit) and could never understand why everyone hated on Raoul. This time he struck me as being quite arrogant, something I never got before from seeing POTO on tour, in the movie, and owning the original London soundtrack.

P.S. US Anons, this is airing at different times throughout the month of March on PBS. It was so worth the pledge drives to see it. The costumes and staging was quite incredible.

[identity profile] myuki-chan.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I had the same reaction as you.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I always preferred Raoul to Eric. IMO Eric was controlling and abusive and kind of a freak. Not because of the face thing but because of the murders and hostage taking and all the crap he did at the end. I know we were supposed to feel sorry for him and consider it the desperate act of a man in love. But abuse is abuse, and one sided love doesn't justify blackmail and threatening someone's life so the woman would give up her freedom for you. That's why this story never sat well with me and why I was happy she ended up with the sane guy.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
This so much. Honestly Erik is like the original Draco in Leather Pants in fandom. He's a really terrible, controlling person who basically kills for the fun of it, and yet fandom thinks he should be with Christine? I don't get it.

I mean he had a giant automaton of her for fap material. Seriously.

[identity profile] fictionalbf.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I am SO GLAD that I'm not the only one who feels this way!

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I never understood why people liked Erik and hated Raoul so much. It was fun to watch the movie with my friends who felt this way. =_=;;

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen this performance, but the PotO movie had me detesting Raoul and loving Erik/Christine, then I saw the play live and omg I am so in love with Raoul! I felt so many warm fuzzies for him and Christine. :)

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Raoul and Christine <3

[identity profile] lightshade597.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I never could choose between the Phantom and Raoul. I think they might have been the start of one of my very first OT3's.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
ALW is a tool, so that doesn't surprise me.

I've always preferred Raoul. I don't think Erik/Christine is romantic, and I never have.

[identity profile] ladyorihime.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. He turned Raoul into an abusive, gambling drunk in his sequel, so he lost a lot of points with me.

I've seen actors portray Raoul in such a way that I'm cheering him on as he rows offstage with Christine at the end and others where Raoul is portrayed as a smug aristocrat with the most punchable face in the world and the actor playing Erik actually succeeds in making the character romantic and touching despite the whole "murdering madman" thing and I hope just once the show will end a different way. But sometimes the actors play it in such a way that I hope Christine clobbers Raoul over the head with an oar while the mob gets its vigilante justice on, so she can resume her career at the Opera without being followed around by either gigantic creeper anymore.
But I really don't understand why anyone would like Hadley's Raoul. I have never seen the character played as so dismissive of Christine's concerns while also being so controlling of her. It's like now that an actor gave to Raoul some of the traits that make the Phantom such a dark and twisted character, tons of people think he really loves Christine. But I like Raoul to be portrayed as sweet and caring and protective, so that he contrasts better with the phantom, who is abusive and controlling even when he tries to be otherwise. Hadley's Raoul acted a lot more like the phantom should, and not one I would feel sorry for. That's not to say I thought Sierra's Christine should have stayed with Ramin's phantom--the anniversary concert was one time I was hoping she'd run for the hills without looking back at either of them. They were a lovely pair of controlling douchebags.

I shipped E/C and thought Raoul was an annoying tool until I actually read the book version. Then I felt totally sorry for Raoul. Dude just couldn't win!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have recently come to conclusion that they should've cast Christian!Ewan McGregor as Raoul in the Schumacher movie (the naive, purehearted young tenor boy from Moulin Rouge! - aristocrat money aside, the characters are pretty damn similar) and there would have been considerably less phandumb and more people seeing Raoul as the sweet and sane option. Gah.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone thought that. There was even a petition.

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm just as torn as Christine. I'm not saying ot3 or anything, I just ship them both. :)

[identity profile] verecunda.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I really don't like the musical version of POTO, but I ended up watching the 25th anniversary version when my sister got it on DVD, and even I loved Hadley's Raoul! (The fact that he's pretty also helps! :P)

I didn't see ALW's speech, though. What a dick.

[identity profile] nemo-de-la-meer.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad people who were never turned on to Raoul are really getting into the idea of R/C as a more prominent ship.

However, still and to this day, Steve Barton made me ship R/C together and Hadley's Raoul didn't do jack shit but make him seem like the drunken, abusive Raoul in LND.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure there's a right answer. It really depends on the individual and the actors.

Eric is absolutely psychopathic (especially in the book), but on the other hand it's an appealing fantasy. He's madly in love, wants you to succeed, is a mentor (in a weird way), and, more than anything, he's exciting! Some actors will have him be more "consumed with love" or even portray this one chance for meaningful contact.

Raoul on the other hand is safe. It's good that he's safe and not crazy, but my oh my can he be bland. Plain toast and a glass of water bland. Now, sometimes the actors can get more life into the character, and make him interesting.

Part of it goes back to Christine herself. It's sometimes disappointing to she her choose a man that supports her financially, but doesn't have any particular passion in opera (iirc), sometimes it's "Phantom's crazy! Get the hell out!"

[identity profile] moonsheen.livejournal.com 2012-03-09 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Trouble is I think a lot of people do forget the original novel is. Well. Mostly a GOTHIC HORROR STORY. The Phantom was originally a figure in the tradition of Frankenstein's Monster--and no we're not talking the grr arrgh Frankenstein's Monster, we're talking the intelligent, eloquent, but but physically monstrous figure rejected by society figure we see in Mary Shelley's novel. The whole point of his character is that he's brilliant, tortured, and in many ways sympathetic but also uncontrollable and terrifying in how far he was willing to go with his obsessions. In the book I never really found any question that Christine found his actions frightening. Even in some versions of the musical I've seen actresses play her as completely horrified by all the misfortune that's befallen the opera house on her account-- especially when people START BLAMING HER FOR IT.

By contrast in the novel Raoul is...well, the person above said it best. He's basically Christian from Moulin Rouge. The starry eyed young aristrocrat who's painfully earnest in spite of his opulent background (embodied by his hedonistic brother). Basically in mind there's not really any question of the novel version of the characters being any form of love triangle, simply because the Phantom is very. much. an antagonist. A sympathetic one, but still a figure of fear and opposition.

So in the musical even though they softened the Phantom a lot, I couldn't ever take him as a romantic interest. The whole "killed several people in Christine's name and got her implicated in their murders" would basically ruin it for me. The musical also leaves out the detail that he's older than Madam Giry and Christine is like 19.

So yes, from a gothic horror romance standpoint I can see why a teenager would dig it, but as an adult? No gurl, step AWAY from the lunatic who hangs people backstage.

OP here. I agree with you and really i was a young girl when i first shipped E/C. Now that I'm nearing my twenties, I think that I ship R/C because really it just makes the most sense as far as romatic relationships go!
