(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)Eric is absolutely psychopathic (especially in the book), but on the other hand it's an appealing fantasy. He's madly in love, wants you to succeed, is a mentor (in a weird way), and, more than anything, he's exciting! Some actors will have him be more "consumed with love" or even portray this one chance for meaningful contact.
Raoul on the other hand is safe. It's good that he's safe and not crazy, but my oh my can he be bland. Plain toast and a glass of water bland. Now, sometimes the actors can get more life into the character, and make him interesting.
Part of it goes back to Christine herself. It's sometimes disappointing to she her choose a man that supports her financially, but doesn't have any particular passion in opera (iirc), sometimes it's "Phantom's crazy! Get the hell out!"
