In some ways I can understand the romanticizing of this period and the role women had. I am fiercely feminist and very independent and currently have no guy whatsoever - and damn if I don't sometimes fantasize about having someone take care of me and not having to fucking worry about making any hard choices or worrying about money.

But it's just a fantasy. I think the reality of living like that is far more brutal than a lot of women who have never actually been treated like that realize.

I think the problem is more in the mindset than in the situation. If people have a mindset that the duties of a homemaker (house care/child care/grocery shopping/etc) are important contributions to a household, as necessary to continued happiness and comfort of the household's members as the working partner's salary, one can have an egalitarian family with a non-working spouse/partner.
But the sexist mindset that fosters terms like "gold digger" and "trophy wife" and even saddles working women with the expectation that child care and house work are still her responsibility is very much alive, so one has to tread carefully in pursuing a partnership where the woman does not work.

Yeah, it's something that sounds nice because it would totally be like the best vacation ever for a few months...but living like that, day in day out, year after year, decade after decade, with nothing else in the future? *shudder*
