I can relate. If there's a movie where a girl already has a fiance but later has another love interest, I WILL ALWAYS CHEER FOR THE FIANCE. It happens to me every time, no matter what. I can't even explain it.

In some ways I can understand the romanticizing of this period and the role women had. I am fiercely feminist and very independent and currently have no guy whatsoever - and damn if I don't sometimes fantasize about having someone take care of me and not having to fucking worry about making any hard choices or worrying about money.

But it's just a fantasy. I think the reality of living like that is far more brutal than a lot of women who have never actually been treated like that realize.

I agree with the first part of this secret. I find the whole film awkward, and Rose personally unrelatable for me, because I would have felt so alive and at home in her aristocratic lifestyle.

I don't think I would have married Cal for such materialistic reasons, though. I understand wanting to keep my family from going bankrupt, but I'm a little more romantic than that -- and he was a jerk, anyway.

Except this is you thinking about making a choice, and that is feminist. Damn SJW--I think they forget that feminism =/= some hive mind set of morals, but the ability to make choices. You would choose to marry for money to save your family from the poorhouse, and that is a-okay.

If she hadn't given a fake name and hadn't hidden herself, he would have taken her and married her, because she was a woman and women didn't get a choice in those matters. So, if you like the idea of having no choice in your marriage and just being a decoration? Okay. Fine. You want that. But that's what Rose was and that's what the life for the rich was back then.

Let me see if I got this right. You would've married a man who yelled at you, disrespected you in front of your family and total strangers, slapped you for stepping out of line, and shot at you when he found out you preferred someone else? I can see how that marriage would go.

It is anti-feminist because it wasn't a fair choice for you to choose really. It wasn't like Rose was free to be with Jack. If she wanted to be with the guy, not only her family will be bumped down to middle class, she would be a mere possession to Cal. Good luck thinking that a marriage like that will make you happy in the long term. Marriage for money are usually unhealthy marriage. And that he's abusive on top of that.

Inb4 someone accuses me for being SJW, but this is the issue I have with choice feminism. Not every decision a woman makes is a feminist one. Feminism isn't simply about choice, but fighting for freedom to make a FAIR choice. In Rose's time, marrying for money was something you HAD to do. It was the status quo, to society, it was not really a choice. And she didn't treat it as one, she was resigned to it like a lot of woman from rich families of that era.

Choosing to be like being a housewife in the 50s wasn't a feminist choice because you were expected to be one despite whatever education and career you had before marriage. Now, in most cultures, housewifery can be considered a feminist choice because it isn't the only acceptable option for women now (although, let's not get it twisted, there is still an expectancy that your career is not before being a housewife of sorts or you're a bitch and that househusbandry is considered to be something to laugh at because it's a 'girly' thing that manly man don't do. Never mind, people don't take housewifery seriously).

If you're willing to enjoy a cushy effortless life that is set up for you on the basis of the idea that you are weaker and less capable than others, I'm not sure where to put that on the scale of activism vs. contributing to the problem, but it's not good.
