I think the problem is that I compare myself too much to my friends/peers/siblings, most of whom are nearly done with school and working (some of them are already starting jobs aimed toward their desired careers). Most of them have at least some idea of what they'd like to do/where they're going, and the ones that don't just don't seem to care much. Many of them have even started *families*, and while I have no intention of doing that any time soon, it feels like I'm so... behind.
I'm honestly freaking out about this all the time. When I think of the future all I see is, well, nothing. I can't even imagine it. And the times when I can envision something, well... it doesn't look good.
The older I get the older it feels like my time is running out, that it will be too late for me to do, well, anything, 'cause I'll be old (physically, mentally, etc. And while I know that logically being in your 20s isn't anywhere near being old, I still feel like it is). TBH, I feel more like I'm in my 50s than anything.
Ugh, I know, it's so stupid. I don't know why I'm like this. I just need to get over myself or something. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 04:49 am (UTC)(link)they still take classes/attend workshops in their chosen fields, do research, write books; hike, dance, do sports; find new hobbies, rediscover old ones
they have stronger senses of themselves because, well... they lived through their 20s and after
and few of their best stories are from their teen years, really
around 21-ish I was in a similar mindset for a good chunk of time, just like shiiiiiit what am I doing everyone I know is making mad cash and humping supermodels all the time, I have extrapolated this understanding somehow mostly from livejournal and facebook posts I guess and my mom was just like "fake it 'till you make it... I'm still faking it sometimes, but so is everyone"
the other piece of succinct advice I remember trying to keep in mind back then:

I've realized that it's all about control. In fact, there is nothing we should be afraid of. Age is literally just a number and I've realized that people who feel young, look young. It's never too late to follow your dreams and realize what you want to do or where you want to go.
I'm 26 and I don't know it yet myself. Sure, it's scary sometimes. But I think if we just free ourselves from this cage society has put around us, we can be happy and at peace with this whole age thing.
Holy wall of text, I'm so sorry XDno subject
(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 06:10 am (UTC)(link)I'm 41 years old. I had the life plan, too. Done with school by age X, married by age Y, kids by age Z, etc. Then you know what? Life happened. Things didn't go according to the plan. What I thought I wanted when I was 20-21 changed completely by the time I was 30. I finished my BA at 22, worked shit jobs until 26. Went back to school. MA at 28. Realized I hated my field. Back to school at 30. PhD finally done at 38 (btw, I was the youngest in my doctoral cohort). Got my first real job, doing something I finally enjoy - in a different field than I started out and doing something I never thought I'd ever want to do - 2 years ago. Along the way, I did get married (but a little later than age Y), but also discovered that I never wanted to have kids.
My point is, live your life and let things develop as they will. Don't be so hung up on what you think you should be doing or what everyone else is doing. Do what you want to do right now. Make decisions that work for you right now. There's always time to adjust your course. Also, I guarantee that those friends who seem to have it all together? They'll be adjusting their courses eventually too. Everyone does. That's just life.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-09 09:36 am (UTC)(link)@amethyst: I was worried about the same things last year and I'm currently 25 years old. I came to realize that it doesn't matter what everyone else is doing. Trust me, everyone goes through life at different paces. It isn't a race. I'm currently working on my Bachelor's and most of the students around me are 19-20 years old. Seriously, you're going to fit right in.
