Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. My first time I didn't have any lube. Like if you're starting with a finger and going very slow, at least at first, lube isn't necessary. And fun fact: sometimes our anuses produce a little lubricant (there are some fluids, after all). If you're a girl, your vag is able to produce just enough natural lubricant for you to use.

If you're really nervous about needing lubricant but can't buy the real stuff, you can try a simple body gel, just remember to wash after (not immediately, but soon-ish) so you won't get infections. And if you shave down there, I recommend you do it a few days before.

Always shower first (for obvious reasons) before trying anal, and only do it when relaxed. Seriously, you won't get anything out of the experience if you're not relaxed.

Once you get used to it, you won't always need lube, even if you're inserting something bigger. But lube certainly helps.
