I've always wondered if this sort of association qualifies as racism? I mean, I often think of Irish people when I eat potatoes but I don't dare say it out loud...

To be fair, "kiwi" doesn't refer to a specific ancestry, so it's not really the same as saying "Irish" anyway

Only in America, right? When I'm eating California Oranges, I don't think of Hollywood celebrities. Is it just because we're a smaller country here in NZ? (Yes, I'm a New Zealander). Also, it's weird that American's call the fruit "kiwi's", where here - in New Zealand - we call them "Kiwi fruit". Kiwi's are the bird's and - colloquially - the people that come from New Zealand. Not the fruit.

And there's my rant :)

OP here.... and not American, actually! From a country that certainly has its shares of stereotypical food associations, and even, sometimes, perhaps, on the part of people who aren't from America. Maybe even from New-Zealanders, who knows?

As a New Zealander, I find this kind of cute. I'm pretty much happy with any recognition our country gets, and hey, there are worse things to be associated with than a fuzzy fruit. Though how did that happen anyway? Aren't kiwifruit from China or something?
