I can see where you're coming from... it's scary to realize that a well-loved fandom you're in now might be shut down by a new favorite that's on the horizon. But it's okay! I figure, as long as you're having fun, it's okay to like different fandoms, even if you feel like you owe it to an old one that's diminishing. Just relax and watch Sherlock. If you don't like it, it's fine. If you do like it, there's no harm in that, either.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should take a look at yourself and stop whining.

If all you had holding this friend to you was the fandom, then you WANT to like this new thing. You can get them back if you join them.

If there was more to it, then your friend may not be as good as you thought they were if a fandom was all it took.

Either way, you are wasting energy being mad at a fictional body. That doesn't give a shit about you. Just watch it allready and form an actual opinion, if you even can look at it objectively.

And that is exactly why I despise Sherlock and BH. It's like people go "OH SHINY!" and completely abandon their old friends and fandom faves. Like old shoes, they just toss them out. H50 did the same thing. BTW, BC is so wierd looking, I just don't get it. At least AOL is cute.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
what is BH?

I've recently wandered away from H50 towards other fandoms (not Sherlock) and trust me it wasn't because I didn't love H50. What I was looking for was a wank free place where people were actually happy about their fandom. Enduring a year of bitching and "the world is ending" exaggerated drama over ever episode of H50 this season was going to drive me crazy if I didn't find a happy place to weather that storm in.

So now I still pay attention to H50 but I actually write and read my fic elsewhere. I bet some of those fans who left for Sherlock had similar reasons.

It's a fandom. Not a marriage with 3 kids and a dog.

well if your whole friendship is based around conversations of/about/involving a fictional story, then y'know, it kind of makes sense that people would abandon them once they lost interest in the story. as far as "abandoning" fandom faves, you were probably into some things previously that you are not into anymore, too.

tl;dr - can't blame 'em. changing interests is healthy ffs.

i do not understand any of these acronyms so im going to quietly slink away now

I could have written this secret from the other side. I was in a wonderful small fandom, and I got sucked into Sherlock. Now I feel horribly guilty that I've lost interest in my small fandom and have no desire to read or comment on the new fic coming out of it.

Samesies

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I actually wanted to talk about Sherlock in my comm.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
This so much. While not exactly a 'small fandom' per se, I left it when now I got new fandom(s) to fangirl over, even though I still have something to do at an event in that fandom. Now I'm just doing that job out of obligation and a small, guilty conscience. ):

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Back in the olden days people called this "getting new interests".

You absolutely do not have to stay "loyal" to your current fandom; you owe it nothing and hey, you can still enjoy it! But everyone's tastes change over time and there's always going to be something new out there that appeals to you, maybe as much as the other fandom, or maybe even more. Moving on can be scary but if we never moved on we wouldn't get anywhere in our lives.

I'm sorry you lost a friend to it, though. :( Maybe one day they'll come back to your old fandom, but if they don't then don't hate them for it. They're perfectly entitled to becoming fans of new things and it's probably not as if they were actively trying to leave your older fandom?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Getting new interests also doesn't mean that you hate your old ones! There are a lot of fandoms that I'm not longer as active in as I once was, but I still like the stories/characters/show/whatever.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it. You're scared of liking a show? But won't you be able to talk to your fandom friend again if you like the show and want to get into the fandom? Why would you not want to like the show? On principle? Sorry this is just counterintuitive to me. I'd understand being scared that you might not like a show, if you wanted to participate in the fandom and was afraid that you won't be able to do it if you don't enjoy or care about the show in question. But I don't see why someone would be afraid of liking a show. Good shows are hard enough to find already.

This. Watch the show, like it, get your friend back... how are these bad things?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because a fandom friend finds new interest or becomes less interested in the fandom you share doesn't mean that they can't still be your friend. It's crappy if they do drop you when they move to new fandoms/interests, but I find that a lot of people will still want to be friends even when interests change.

[identity profile] htebazytook.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it do it do it!

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
If your friendship easily disintegrates over a change of interest then perhaps you're not real friends. I was drawn away from my fandom in which I made good friends by Sherlock, but I always drop by time to time to chat with them. And even though some of them watched Sherlock and didn't like it, I won't stop liking them.

Nothing lasts forever. Take a philosophical view of the matter and get all "Circle of Life" zen about it, then watch your new show and enjoy the crazy sex fandom.

'Cause seriously, Sherlock!fandom is craaaaaaazy.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, so true on all counts.

seriously, I fail to see the problem. If you like it, you and your friend can squee together. If you don't, you're exactly where you are now. Watch the first episode and see how you feel - and jsyk, your small old fandom doesn't have to DIE just because people are interested in other things. Fandoms sometimes only get activity in waves. But I know all kinds of fandoms that have hung in there for YEARS even though they might not be as active as they once were.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
It sucks when you are still stuck on a fandom and all your friends have moved on. I tried grasping at friends who jumped ship to other fandoms, but in the end, it can't be helped. People get sated with one fandom and they move on to another. And you can try and follow them, but sometimes that doesn't work. But you just can't keep someone in a fandom once their spark for it is gone.

[identity profile] playwhatgoeson.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's totally worth it! Besides it will give you and fandom friend a new thing to bond and flail over.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd just watch it because it's really good, and then pretend like you haven't, or don't make/join/etc fan things. Out of spite (ha). Or at least don't feel obligated to involve yourself in the fandom, because honestly, who cares! The fandom is annoying and giant. Your attention is probably better devoted to a small & caring fandom.

It's good enough, like really good. To watch on a casual level and enjoy it. It's one of those shows that's really worth watching even if you never talk about it again.
