I tend to hate pairings more than "Slash" or "Het". The distinction makes no sense to me personally. Here's one thing I've been wondering though. If someone doesn't read slash or het, would said person be interested if one of the characters was gender-bent making it their preferred genre?

Based on personal experience, I would say yes. Although I think it also depends on why they're reading fic to begin with (for the plot or the smut or a combination of both). For example, smut in m/m slash fic does absolutely nothing for me because I can't relate to either of the characters. Genderbending one or both characters to female would fix that problem.
