I'd say it probably has roots in a lot of werewolf fic? The terms themselves are taken from terms used to describe hierarchy in wolf packs. Just... with bonus mpreg and self-lubricating assholes. Or something.

Basically, it's a cookie-cutter AU that sorts characters into 'tops' and 'bottoms' (dom/sub, however you want to say it) and throws in some animalistic traits. Mostly involves mating by biological imperative, and heat cycles.
