I always give a bit of a side eye to people that make a distinction between slash and het pairings, like there's something fundamentally different about them.

It's not the gender of the characters involved that should be what people make up their minds about when shipping.

that's true, but it IS very important for people when looking for fic. Sometimes certain fic just doesn't appeal to you. I think Mary and Matthew are a perfectly lovely couple in Downton Abbey and I was cheering for them the whole way, but I'm not interested in het fic so I don't read it.

i didn't try terribly hard in uni (so take that as a 'i really might be wrong'), but when i was studying manga in a class i took and we were talking about BL, i read a bunch of essays about different takes on why women like m/m. it seems that the consensus is that there is a fundamental difference between m/m and m/f and why women choose one or the other, or both at different times for different reasons. of course this is only referring to BL, i don't know if it applies to western slash.
