We see the sniper that was targeting John; some people think he's Moran.

Because John is special? Why can't he be the guy targeting Mrs. Hudson or Lestrade? Why was anyone targeting Lestrade anyway? I wouldn't be surprised if Moran was in that ep, I felt like I was missing vital information all over the place, and I still don't get Moriarity's point.

I am always amused that Moriarity didn't consider targeting Mycroft though

1. Well, yes, actually. Sherlock might care about other people now, but I think it's fair to say that of the people targeted, he cared about him first, and probably still cares about him the most.

2. It's just a theory. Not an unreasonable one, though: They only showed one sniper; why not have it be the one guy people know about from canon?

you are quite correct. But also, I think we can be sure that John IS the one he cares most about. Who else could possibly compete?

We see Mrs. Hudson's killer too. The dude fixing her lights when John barges in thinking she's in trouble and realizes he's been tricked. Then there's a scene where the she's having tea with the dude and he ominously lifts a wrench or something.

I'm not saying it's not a good theory. Moran is canonically an excellent marksman. But that's not really my point. Suggesting that Moriarty would use Moran for John because John makes a lot of assumptions about how much Moriarty cares about who Sherlock cares about, hence my question about Lestrade and not Mycroft. But now that I remember that people didn't see the other sniper, I think I know where that reasoning's coming from.

Actually, we know he cares at least to some degree: The point of him kidnapping John in TGG was because he knew Sherlock cared about him. I suppose that could have changed in the year+ between the time the TGG and TRF take place, but, again, it's not an unreasonable assumption.

I agree, but I just think it's a major assumption he would be fussy about the way he killed them, so as to parallel John's place in Sherlock's life with Moran's place in his. Especially when no one would know. It's possible. But it's still a leap.

John is definitely special. The first person that comes to Sherlock's mind is John, and it takes Moriarty's prompting for him to even think about Mrs Hudson and Lestrade.

Ugh, that line and its delivery is so chilling. I was really scared for John there.
