People were writing fanfic with Irene Adler before she existed in the BBC universe (like, even before it was announced she'd be in S2, and certainly before we knew anything about who was playing her or what she'd be like), as well. People were also writing scenarios for Sherlock "dying" and coming back before TRF aired. So this is hardly out of the ordinary for the fandom. People have scenarios and characters from canon that they like, and they're putting them in the BBC!verse before they happen... [shrug]

This.

We've got the ACD canon, and thus, everything from ACD canon is free to be adapted and changed and moved not only for BBC canon, but for every other Sherlock adaptation around.

(And now I'm wondering how Irene would be in the Great Mouse Detective universe...)

they already have that one character in GMD singing about taking off all her clothes, so they'd need to go a different route with Irene than BBC did.

Ugh, no. Sorry, but, I wasn't even a huge fan of Irene even before what they did to her in the BBC version*. Like Moriarty, she was a minor character (she was in ONE STORY) whose importance got vastly inflated post-canon. Probably because she was a female, and many post-canon works have used her to give Sherlock a straight sex life.

And, actually, the books GMD were based on have (I'm using WIki here so...):
Mlle. Relda - a beautiful opera singer; based on Irene Adler from the Sherlock Holmes story "A Scandal in Bohemia". Basil seems to have romantic feelings for Relda but not much is shown in the books as to their relationship, much like Adler and Holmes's relationship.

"Much like Adler and Holmes"? Adler and Holmes weren't romantically involved. AT ALL.

*The BBC version of Adler makes me think of a quote I once heard from an video review on the internet, where the guy was upset that a band had butchered a song he was actually only lukewarm about: "I didn't realize it was possible to desecrate something I wasn't really a fan of to begin with, but they found a way!"

I like Irene as she is. A minor character in a story I like, who managed to fool Sherlock Holmes once. And that's what I always have in mind when I wish to see her in other adaptations. Not as a pseudo-romantic interest at all.

I do wonder who was the first to put her in that particular place, just so we can go and throttle him.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well.. now I feel bad for venting on you like that. Sorry.

Yeah, I could like her if post-canon works would stay true to her canon character (including being in love with a man named Godfrey Norton. NOT a man named "Sherlock Holmes"). Or at least true-ish.. But no, they're too busy showing her trying to fuck Sherlock to bother.

People were trying to make Holmes and Adler a couple before you and I were even born. For example, the character Nero Wolfe has been "speculated" to be Holmes and Adler's son back in the 50's (for the record, Rex Stout the character's creator said no such thing). So at least since then.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, don't worry. You had no way of knowing if my interest in Irene was due to the original story and her will to go all out for the man he loved (Norton, of course) or for her latter role as romantic interest in the adaptations that followed.

I hate that she's turned into a romantic interest (I just had a discussion with a friend about bbc!Irene just because of that) since I feel it diminishes her. But I still can't help but wish to see her every time a new adaptation comes along, to see if they finally get her right.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Though, really, I've seen you in other posts and threads, and I should have remembered you're one of the (few, it seems) people who hate the IRENE <3 SHERLOCK TL4EVER nonsense...

The BBC version is just so... God...

I don't think being in love with Sherlock HAS to diminish her, actually; but it often ends up doing so (like the BBC version, where her emotions end up being her downfall). But even if it didn't, I wouldn't like it.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
With so many threads, it's understandable. It helps I decided not to change icons for a while, but I know it can be confusing.

I liked the BBC version until she started with the nosense of her attraction to Sherlock (I know sexuality in RL is fluid, but the trope of the lesbian in love with a guy tires me SO much) ... and I would have even accepted that if she hadn't been saved by him at the end. By which I mean, I don't want her dead, I just want her to save herself. Is that too much to ask?

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it can be confusing...

Honestly, until/unless they show John trying to get until Sherlock's pants, I'm just gonna say Moffat's full of shit on the whole "fluid sexuality" thing.

As for Sherlock saving her: I didn't want him to because she's not worth it.
