Secrets saying "I don't like het" or "I don't like slash" make me a little bit sad. I mean, pairings are more than just sex content so it's a shame that some people turn off when they see a M/F, M/M, or F/F pairing just because of the genders of the characters.

Naturally, I understand not being turned on by the mechanics of het or slash or femslash sex and no one has to be, but if it's just about two characters interacting in a source material, I think it's a shame if you (general) aren't interested just because it's a M/F or M/M or F/F pair. Of course, people like what they like, so whatever.

How to explain... For me, when I picture a romantic relationship, it's always het. That's what I want, and that's how I think, and that's how I see relationships. So, when I read shippy fic and I want to connect with it, a fic with a relationship that, for me, just doesn't really work at all in my head is not going to be my first choice. The mechanics of the sex is not a draw. The ship is not a draw. Which isn't to say that I'll never read slash at all for any reason, period. But the story in question has to have something really extraordinary going on outside of the slashing and the sex. Daniel Jackson's Diary, frex. Very slashy, but funny enough that I can overlook the whole not-my-preferred-pairing thing. (Why, why, why did that site get taken down??? I never did find out.)

And yes, I get that other people want different things out of their relationships. That's not what this is about. It's simply that when I want to read a shippy fic (which isn't that often, but it's been known to occur), I want to read about the relationship the characters have with each other much more than I do the sex. And the relationships that I connect with emotionally are het. That's how it works for me. That's not how it works for everyone, and I get that. But I don't read fic for everyone, so that's fine.
