I kind of see the point in it, actually. Fic/fanart is one of a kind, created from the artist's mind. If you're making an icon by cropping a popular screenshot/gif sequence then chances are, someone else out there is doing the exact same thing, making the same icon of the same pose. So if they're both the same, who gets credit? Should one and not another maker? How do you tell who made which? It's just kind of pointless to me to ask for credit for spending two seconds in an image program to crop a generic picture that's available to everyone who's a fan of the show do do the same thing with, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
No. Icons don't take 2 seconds to make. I think it would be nearly impossible to find two icons that were exactly alike. Screencaps are huge and icons are one tiny 100x100 portion of that. There's countless different ways you could crop the image. Also, nearly every icon maker I've come across uses different colors, textures etc. on their icons. I've never seen two icons that are exactly alike, even if they're of the same scene or the same image. Hell, icon challenges often require you to use the same image and then everyone makes a unique icon out of it.

IA that if all you're doing is resizing an already square image, then yeah, screw crediting that. But that really is NOT what most icon makers make. And I don't think anyone that did that would post icons and ask for credit.

I guess for me it's more of the fact that, well...I've yet to see someone making a living off of making fandom icons. Sure, they're work, and be proud that you made them. But are you going to be ruined forever if someone put one on a post without crediting you(more than likely because they found it somewhere it wasn't credited either)? Not really.

But that's just my opinion. It's how I feel about the icons and fanart I make. If someone likes it and enjoys it enough to use it, that's enough to make me happy squee, because it means I've made someone else happy, and if no one else ever learns that I made it? Well, I made it because I wanted to share whatever bit of fandom lol/cute/whatever with other fans, not because I wanted credit.

TL;DR: I understand wanting credit for your work. I just save it for works that are exclusively mine. Those who don't want to limit to that? That's cool, too.

And people make a living off of fanfic?

I don't think anyone would be "ruined forever" by not being credited. All I'm saying is that if you've put time and hard work into something, credit is nice. It's not the end of the world, no, but I don't think it's unreasonable to request.

And, yes, I think that most people want to share their work for the sake of sharing it. Otherwise, why post it online at all? I just think it could be disheartening to see someone using your icon, without credit, and especially if they didn't even tell you they liked it. Especially if you put a lot of time into it.

I don't think it's unreasonable to request, or be happy with credit. I think it's unreasonable that some icon makers police obsessively and when they find an icon they made without their name plastered all over it, attack the user and generally overreact before they even find out where the individual in question found the icon or if they even know who made it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's really not what I'm talking about here, is it.

I'm talking about using someone else's work without credit. I think that's a bad thing. If you don't agree, well, then that's your business.

[identity profile] alizara.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* I always credit if I'm using an icon I know is someone else's, as long as I know who made it. It's very possible to accidentally credit the wrong person or not know who made it at all if where you find it hasn't done so either. If someone comes to me and says "Hey, i made that", I'm happy to credit them. I just don't require that people do the same thing if they use mine.

Edited for spelling fails.

And the award for best demonstration of sanity in this thread goes to... :)

[identity profile] alizara.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I just can't work up any outrage over someone using something I made that frankly was put together using stuff someone else made.

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
From your keyboard to fandom's ears.

(Okay, I know the analogy doesn't really work but whatever... you get the idea.)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realize this is EXACTLY the argument the rest of the world makes about fanfic, right? I don't care if you think that fanfic =/= icons, to the rest of the world, IT IS THE EXACT SAME THING. So, anyway, now you get to see what it feels like on the other side of the argument.

[identity profile] alizara.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I don't post fanfic and I don't care if someone uses my fanart. All I'm saying is that while I will indeed credit sources if I use someone else's icons, I'm not really going to get upset if they don't do the same for mine.
