I think review videos usually work best when you're reviewing writing that's done professionally (or at least semi-professionally and vanity published). When you do things like that with something like fanfic, which is done as a hobby, it can come off as incredibly mean. If someone's getting paid to write, then there's at least the excuse that they should be able to write (although, obviously this is not always the case), but with fanfic writers it's just a past time. There's a big difference between giving someone honest critique on their fic and ripping it apart for laughs.

I might be taking it a bit too seriously, though, but that's just my take on it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. With all of this.

Word.

This.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree with all of this.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I can't help but think you might hurt someone's feelings... but a mean part of me likes watching critical reviews of things I like and things I hate. As long as you back up your opinions on why it sucks, and what could have been done better, it could lessen the backlash.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I get how that could be fun, and it's not like it would be... immoral or ethically wrong as people are putting their stuff out there to be criticized, but that sounds kind of... meanyfacish? Keep in mind that's from me; I'm incredibly sensitive and not emotionally equipped from the internet, so maybe your mock-ees won't mind as much, but yeah, that's my feeling. If you do, please be aware that you are opening yourself up for mocking too. The fact that you're uncomfortable with people making fun of you probably shows that you shouldn't make fun of other people- then again, Captain Kindegarten Morality speaking

The part where you say "bad fanfiction (or any fanfiction)"... does that mean you're going to make fun of fanfic that you don't even think is bad? do you mean just pointing out the flaws in an otherwise good piece, or an affectionate parody type thing? Like, in the way that a person could make a Harry Potter parody without hating or even disliking Harry Potter.

[identity profile] hunterwithcause.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you really want to do it you could always post the videos under a second penname/sock account?

Though I have to admit, unless it's a trollfic like My Immortal I feel uncomfortable with these kinds of videos. I can never shake the feeling that the writer is just a kid discovering fanfiction and writing for the first time, and just putting their heart out there when they post their fic. :/

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Regarding My Immortal, I can't but feel second-hand embarrassment for people who think it was a sincere work.

Like how my Dad can't be swayed to understand that Stephen Colbert is not a real right-wing US pundit.

sounds tacky tbh

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
You know, you could always read your own crappy old fanfiction out loud and make fun of that...

And if that just sounded unpleasant to you, you shouldn't do it with fics of other writers... :/!
If you happen to find people who give you the permission to parody their stuff, on the other hand, that would be an interesting concept! *Send me your crappy fanfiction :D* They could stay anonymous, or the authors themselves could make a cameo at the end. I'd listen to that.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to both of these ideas.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
This! If the authors actually give permission that would be a whole different story than just randomly looking for bad fic to rip apart.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
lol beautiful

I have to say that I agree with the other commentors - this sounds like it'd be kinda tacky, and pretty mean if you did it with fanfic.

The main difference between that, and doing actual published books is, as someone already said, that fanfic is a hobby. The author isn't getting paid for it, and they're just doing it because they enjoy it. Granted, there's a chance you could end up reviewing a fic of a professional author - there are some who write fanfic. But at the same time? You're far, far more likely to end up ripping a 12 year old's first attempt at writing, which just...is not cool. Not cool at all.

So, my vote is no.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Video reviews of written work in general don't appeal to me, so I'm also unfamiliar with Alex Reads... or the appeal, but if you've got charisma and a sense of humour, go for it. Don't be surprised when your idea of what constitutes good or bad fanfic is side-eyed though, and if you do end up looking more like the pot calling the kettle black.

Personally, I find it more entertaining when people go over their own embarrassing works to compare to how they are now.

[identity profile] dreamsofspike.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
If you do it, keep it light and not mean-spirited.

And start with your own. :P

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
you could do that if you wanted to look like a total jerk. Do you? If so, then by all means.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say definitely not fanfic without someone's permission. To you it's just crappy fic waiting to be mocked. But you've no idea who the person is behind the writing, and why they've written it. It could be a fun hobby. It could even be a release from their absolutely crappy life. Maybe it's a 12-year-old who's tormented at school and ignored at home, and this is the only happiness she's getting right now. Do you really want to taunt someone who could potentially self-harm? Or could push someone into depression? Yeah, there's probably a slim chance of that, but do you really want to take that chance just for your entertainment?

Things like this make me really glad the internet was just a bit after my junior high and high school school years. I really don't envy crap people have to go through these days.

[identity profile] oroburos69.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
The golden rule, is, as usual, useful here. Would you like to be singled out and have your writing skill mocked? Because this isn't judging, it's mockery.

...Yeah, I just think this is an unholy level of mean, and that only a real dick would go through with it. I had a friend who left fandom because of people singling her out like this. I miss her.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
I find it hilarious that you'd want to make fun of anyone, considering you couldn't even proofread the typo in your own secret. Sweep around your own front door before you go shitting on someone else's.

And if that sounds mean to you, think how you'd be making someone feel with your clever idea.

NO. You're a nasty, mean-spirited little shit for even considering it. Get the fuck off of the internet and grow the fuck up.

I say go for it as long as you're prepared to also deal with the people who, justified or not, will not like you doing it. Also as long as you don't cloak it in a charade of "I'm just helping them learn!!!!" or "It's all in good fun!!!!" If you're going to do something potentially assholeish, embrace the assholery cos otherwise you'll just look like someone who can dish it out but who can't take it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Go a head. Seen it before. Seen it long before Alex did it. Nothing new. If you don't feel like being mean, make a joke out of how bad it is.
