I was totally fascinated by Leah, NGL. Also, coincidentally, she's not even the only werewolf character named Leah who I'm supposed to hate but who I really want to know more about even though the author seems to want me to see her as totally irritating. See also Leah from the Mercy Thompson/Alpha and Omega books by Patricia Briggs (who I fully acknowledge treats other people horribly, but her psychology fascinates me...her husband basically married her because she's fuckable but unloveable, and she can't ever leave that pairing unless one of them dies, and they're immortal and have been together for hundreds of years...how would you not be totally fucked up by that...uh, /tangent).

Oh my god, yes. The harder the Mercy books try to make me hate Leah, the more I sympathize with her. The fact that Bran is an unrepentant asshole doesn't excuse her nastiness, but it certainly explains why she's never been able to grow, and if nothing else the woman has been stuck with that manipulative bastard for a hundred years and her will hasn't broken yet - that says she's got the most incredible backbone, and she deserves better than the smug dismissal of everyone in the books.

Both of these so much! I mean I know she treats everyone horribly, and her situation is no excuse...but the fact that Bran pretty much admits during his pov [in the first Alpha and Omega novel, I think?], that he married her because he couldn't love her - and that he didn't give enough of a damn to try to 'fix things' between them always just makes me feel horrible for her. : /

I think the way the other characters dismiss Leah as totally bitchy and worthless would bother me less if any of them ever really called Bran on his manipulative bullshit. I mean, various characters disagree with him on occasion, but no one ever sits him down and has the "no, really you're a manipulative bastard and have ruined lives" talk. He has so much manpain that everyone else has to for the most part treat him like he walks on water to prop him up.

I do recall reading a snippet of the new Alpha and Omega novel and Bran mentioned that Leah runs the pack finances. So hurrah for writing something about her that isn't "she's vain", "she's a bitch", or "she's unloveable", Patricia Briggs.

I tend to agree - but for some characters, namely the werewolves, I can understand why they wouldn't. But would think someone would have said something, at some point in time. But, then again, I'm a little torn about Bran as a whole. He is a manipulative ass, but he generally does have a point as well.

Personally, I think the part that gets me the most is the way it's completely dismissed the effect that living in the situation probably does effect her. My impression was that it was something of an open secret that it wasn't a happy marriage. After years of that treatment, I'd be surprised if she *wasn't* at least a little bitter/bitchy, not that it excuses her behavior. [At least that I recall - It's been a while since I've read any of the books sadly ^^;; But it's nice to know that something other than 'Man, what a bitch!' is being said about her!]

...how wrong is it that this description of their relationship kind of makes me want to read the series now?

*is a complete sucker for self-destructive relationships that are called out as such in canon*

[identity profile] karate0kat.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
They're a really small part of the series. I mean, Bran gets a good amount of "screen" time between the two series (Mercy Thompson/Alpha and Omega take place in the same universe) but Leah is usually only in short scenes or just mentioned. There's really only one chapter that focuses on their relationship, and it fueled a ridiculous amount of fanon from me, lol.

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, that would explain why I never heard about her in previous mentions of the series. :\

That saddens me. I always seem to latch onto the side characters/relationships that get like 10 pages/minutes of book/screentime. You'd think with the amount of fanon there is for certain styles of pairings, there'd be more original canon works with same kind of subjects.
