I was totally fascinated by Leah, NGL. Also, coincidentally, she's not even the only werewolf character named Leah who I'm supposed to hate but who I really want to know more about even though the author seems to want me to see her as totally irritating. See also Leah from the Mercy Thompson/Alpha and Omega books by Patricia Briggs (who I fully acknowledge treats other people horribly, but her psychology fascinates me...her husband basically married her because she's fuckable but unloveable, and she can't ever leave that pairing unless one of them dies, and they're immortal and have been together for hundreds of years...how would you not be totally fucked up by that...uh, /tangent).

Oh god this. I've always thought that one of the best things about Twilight is how much potential most of the side-characters had, especially those two and Alice, imo. And then we're supposed to give a shit about the cardboard cut-outs that are Bella and Edward (though I agree with the idea that it could be interesting if treated like the creepy unhealthy relationship it actually is). It's absolutely hilarious to me.

I swear Stephanie Meyer is like, the queen of getting the exact opposite message across from what she intended. She's practically turned it into a fucking artform. The more the Twilight wants you to dislike a character, the more interesting they are, and vice-versa. I can't even remember if Edward had a personality or not beyond creepy, and chiselled jawline.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. i like my twilight laughably ignorant of feminism, thankyouverymuch. it's what makes it so badgood.

I would love to read this book.

As written by someone who is not Stephanie Meyer.

I didn't know I was supposed to dislike Leah, or Rosalie, until I looked for the fandom. Not the "so bad it's good this is hilarious" fandom, the "I genuinely think these books are good, I am Team Edward/Team Jacob" fandom. I totally thought Leah was the author breaking the fourth wall with a voice of reason and talking about how fucked up everything really was. MY BAD.

I'm still looking for good fic about the side characters that isn't a redux, "how it should have ended", or so Meyer-esque that it involves them being cured of what makes them interesting in order to be BFFs with Bella. Then again, I don't actively look for fic in this fandom, so I guess I need to invest more free time into that?

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, Rosalie. <3 She was one of the very few characters in the stupid series I genuinely liked.

I was never much into Leah, though, as I thought she was, well, kind of understandably whiny (certainly less so than Bella ever was, though). It didn't appeal to me.

If someone else wrote a book about Leah I would read the hell out of it. Her story would be fascinating.

Rosalie love utterly baffles me (racism and baby obsession, pass), but Leah was fantastic. She's probably the most sane of all the characters, even though she does get a little bogged down by Meyers' obligatory "but what if I can't have baaaabies now?!?!?!" stuff w/r/t to her werwolfism.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, those girls are smoking.

/has no idea who these characters are

[identity profile] nomorefrostbite.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not a Twilight fan by any stretch of the imagination, but i've been dragged along to the films by friends, and then went to a few for my undying LUST for Chris Heyerdahl (even when made tragically fug by hair & makeup people), but THESE TWO WERE THE ONLY ONES I CARED ABOUT AT ALL.

So I just had to comment, yup.

[identity profile] saiika-von-maou.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Let's face it, the background characters were all shunted to the side in favor of an incredibly boring romance; and that goes double for anyone that didn't like/didn't care about said romance. I'm still peeved about the couple of paragraphs of amazing back-story for Carlisle that was never touched upon again.

The guy had enough willpower to never harm a single human, even as a newborn vampire, and we're all supposed to hail Bella as the Queen of Vamps after that? Right.

I'd like to know more about most of the side characters Meyer writes tbh. Her main characters are her most boring.

[identity profile] madrigog.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still so fucking bitter that Jacob and Leah didn't wind up falling for (but not imprinting on!) each other. The conversation they had about imprinting taking away their choices seemed like Meyer was finally getting a clue, but SUDDENLY RENESMEE UGH. ...I should just buck up and write an AU.

IA. Reading the first book I was like, "why is Alice the only girl I give a shit about?" And when I got dragged to Breaking Dawn by my twilight-obsessed friends, I found myself way more interested in what Leah's deal was than in anything to do with Bella.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I would love to read a book totally about Leah.

But chances are Meyer would probably turn her into a total Mary Sue just to make her more "relatable".

[identity profile] amyrat151.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that all people with half a brain thought this. I mean, I know people like Alice but why? Seriously she is a demon, she's just Edward with boobs. She has no respect for people outside of her family and she's completely okay with all the ways Edward controls Bella. But both of those ladies are actually sympathetic.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man is that Leah?? Because YEP. I've never seen the movies or read the books fully, but all I know about Leah points to the massive girlcrush that I know I would develop if I did.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
The side characters had a lot of potential, especially the ones Smeyer made look bad so Bella could look good.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
If Twilight had focused on ANYONE but Bella, Edward and Jacob it would've been a better series. I had actually read Stephenie's notes she'd wrote about the other characters when fans wanted to know about them. The other Cullens, Volturi, other vampires and werewolves are SO MUCH more interesting.

http://www.twilightlexicon.com/2006/03/11/personal-correspondance-1/
for anyone who's curious. These are really the only reason I defend Twilight in that it really isn't that bad and could've been better. Stephenie Meyer just sucks at putting her ideas on paper and creating a story for her characters. I can relate to that. I have an easier time creating characters than actually using them in a work of fiction.

[identity profile] zippytheavenger.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Stephenie Meyer had this whole 'vengeful female deprived of her mate' theme in villainous characters, and then here's Bella in this wildly codependent relationship, and one has to wonder if Edward had been killed instead of leaving her that one time, would she have gone the same way as Victoria? Signs point to yes.

Oh, the Leah hate was one of the most horrible things in the books for me. I don't understand why Steph wants us to despise Leah for being a "bitter harpy" and "making everyone else as miserable as she is" when, A: Her fiancee dumped her for her cousin, she has every right in the world to be bitter, and B: Jacob did the exact same thing when he wouldn't get over Bella.

If this had been intentional it would have been a fascinating character study. Since it isn't, it's merely a creepy insight into Steph's twisted mind.

Leah. The only one to not get a happy ending. Seriously, she was by far my favorite. If I could I'd write an entire novel based around her and make it into a 3 part movie.

Jasper was another side character I could read a 4 part book series about. Seriously? All his time spent during the vampire wars in the south. I'd read that.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you. My favorite character was Carlisle, followed closely by Alice. I bet those books would have been so much better if Meyer had focused on her side characters instead.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. As much as I dislike the series, there is so much stuff I would be interested in:

- Leah
- Alice
- Jasper and his relationship with Alice
- Carlisle
- Rosalie and her relationship with Carlisle (in fact, throw out Emmett and Esme, who do absolutely nothing, and have the pairing be Rosalie/Carlisle. It would be potentially dysfunctional, but I'd love it!)
- Charlie
- general stuff I can't remember right now.

It's just incredible how much wasted potential there is. These books could have been good.

[identity profile] edgyspice.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, when I looked up Leah's backstory after sitting through Breaking Dawn I thought, "Well, that's actually interesting, unlike the rest of this shit."
