I disagree. I always felt like he was slowly changing throughout the entire book, but seeing that he was going to die alone if he didn't change was the straw that broke the camel's back. It wasn't so much the main reason for his change, but everything combined and the fact that he was going to die alone was what caused him to change so quickly and sincerely. You see him softening through each ghost visitation. Being visibly embarrassed when the Ghost of Christmas Present repeats a heartless quote of Scrooge's and his inquiries about Tiny Tim's condition always led me to believe he was realizing how wrong his way of life and thinking is before he finds out he's going to die alone if he doesn't change.
