Oh thank God. I'm not the only one who has a problem with this.

I've not read it in ages so can't remember if the book actually does this, but pretty much every film/tv version I can think of has implied he starts to change while in the company of the second ghost. So I see the time with the third ghost as the thing that made him definitely cross the line into goodness, but the roots were already there. Even allowing for this I do see what you mean, it does come across a bit like that.

I thought it was because he didn't want to die without having the chance to make up for the ways he'd hurt people. Because even before knowing he was going to die, he'd gotten to "know" and care about them and realized how wrong he'd been.

I always saw it as the straw that broke the camels back. Like, if they had only shown him his own death it still wouldn't have done anything, but that as the icing on the depressing cake of the three ghosts was enough to really make an impact.

I could have sworn he was changed by the time the second ghost was done with him. After seeing Crachet's home and Tiny Tim. The ghosts just weren't done with him yet, so he couldn't do anything about it til after the last one.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the signs of him softening up beforehand were there. He did greet the spirits with, "I know you've come to do me good," or something to that effect.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the versions I'm familiar with have Scrooge starting to change over the course of the three visits, and that the visit from the Ghost of Christmas Future is there to give him the final push to make sure that he changes NOW, not later or try to delay it further.

Self-serving repentance seems pretty organic to me.

[identity profile] 100101011.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed about the point you're making, but it never annoyed me. i just like a christmas carol because it's a somewhat dark and morbid christmas tale.

[identity profile] pumpkin-cake.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. I always felt like he was slowly changing throughout the entire book, but seeing that he was going to die alone if he didn't change was the straw that broke the camel's back. It wasn't so much the main reason for his change, but everything combined and the fact that he was going to die alone was what caused him to change so quickly and sincerely. You see him softening through each ghost visitation. Being visibly embarrassed when the Ghost of Christmas Present repeats a heartless quote of Scrooge's and his inquiries about Tiny Tim's condition always led me to believe he was realizing how wrong his way of life and thinking is before he finds out he's going to die alone if he doesn't change.

Legit point, OP; imo Dickens is a total douche & waste of shelf space, and I say this as a victorianist.

I'm in agreement with the others who could see Scrooge changing throughout his time with the ghosts. It's not until the very end that he breaks down, but the Present ghost had him enjoying himself and actually caring about people. He was even happy and excited and managing somewhat to be merry with the Past ghost, at his master's party.

Of course, I'm also basing most of my experience with Scrooge on Muppet Christmas Carol since I only just recently read the book for the first time, so, y'know. Skating penguins.

Seriously, OP, this has bothered me for YEARS.

I dunno, I kinda like the fact that it takes that much to actually change him. People don't just magically *poof* into entirely different personalities, and having it take less to get through to him would have seemed a bit sappy.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, there are signs he's starting to ask the right questions already, but in the end there's nothing really wrong with realizing you want human connections and have to reach out and be kind to get them.

He suspects it's him who's dying unloved, then he sees Tiny Tim, and that seems like it's supposed to be important too. That's why seeing that makes him want to confront who it was, and do something to prevent Tiny Tim's death.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's realistic. The truth is most people can look at all their flaws, think they're awful, and really want to change, but they never will. Most people need to hit rock bottom before they get their shit together, and that was the case for Scrooge. It wasn't till he realized he was going to die as the bitter old man he was that he really got in his head "I have to change RIGHT NOW".

Besides, he was genuinely repentful and obviously they weren't trying to paint him as a perfect human being.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
His horror at Ignorance and Want after riding the contact high of Christmas with other people, was where Scrooge started to reform, I think.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
But his greeting to the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come was cheerful and hopeful. He was already changing. It's why he even asked about Tiny Tim in the first place.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
What about Tiny Tim though? He seemed pretty shaken up by that, or at least he did in adaptions of this story.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's because Dickens sucks and can't write a non-archetypal/over-the-top character to save his life. There is no worse use of capslock in the history of writing than "and Tiny Tim, who did NOT die..." Oh, fuck off!

...sorry, I have a lot of feelings about this.

Personally, I was more bothered that a big part of this story seems to be that you're a bad person if you don't celebrate Christmas, and don't want to celebrate it. Alright, Scrooge was a dick in general, which is bad, but you can still not be interested in celebrating Christmas without being a dick too.

/Someone who is not interested in Christmas and often gets called a Scrooge for it.

I guess it depends, anon. In the Muppets version look all the other versions imma let you finish but this is the best one ever you can see him changing all along, so when we reach that part we're all cringing because we can see he doesn't need to see it. And then we just want to hug Scrooge until it's over.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Just playing devil's advocate, but does it really matter why he treats other people better, as long as he does?

[identity profile] noskidaddle.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I just hated that story cuz of Tiny Tim and how nice and holy is, and everyone should love the fuck out of him. Even Scrooge adored him. Gah
