Eh, there are signs he's starting to ask the right questions already, but in the end there's nothing really wrong with realizing you want human connections and have to reach out and be kind to get them.

He suspects it's him who's dying unloved, then he sees Tiny Tim, and that seems like it's supposed to be important too. That's why seeing that makes him want to confront who it was, and do something to prevent Tiny Tim's death.
