I'm in agreement with the others who could see Scrooge changing throughout his time with the ghosts. It's not until the very end that he breaks down, but the Present ghost had him enjoying himself and actually caring about people. He was even happy and excited and managing somewhat to be merry with the Past ghost, at his master's party.

Of course, I'm also basing most of my experience with Scrooge on Muppet Christmas Carol since I only just recently read the book for the first time, so, y'know. Skating penguins.

Muppets! Yes! That movie rocks, but even in the books I got the same sort of "feel" about his change of heart. ♥
