It's realistic. The truth is most people can look at all their flaws, think they're awful, and really want to change, but they never will. Most people need to hit rock bottom before they get their shit together, and that was the case for Scrooge. It wasn't till he realized he was going to die as the bitter old man he was that he really got in his head "I have to change RIGHT NOW".

Besides, he was genuinely repentful and obviously they weren't trying to paint him as a perfect human being.
