I didn't understand this myself at first but if you hate something that's kinda super popular (ie: Homestuck, Hetalia, Sherlock, Hunger Games) It's hard to avoid it where ever you go on the internet, and it feels like it's getting shoved down your throat. If you go on deviantart, the front page might have Homestuck / Hetalia crap. Your favorite artists might be drawing gratuitous amount of fanart for it, etc etc. You go on Tumblr? Someone you watch might fangirl or fanboy those series hardcore, but you don't want to tumblr savior them completely, and some Homestuck / Sherlock posts still might get through because they forgot to tag it or whatever.

Just let them let off some steam. You can just go "haha sucks to be you" and lul.

OP here. That's not what this secret is about. This is about some new material from a fandom cropping up and fans already in the fandom deciding to make the place a hateful environment. There's nothing wrong with letting off steam once, so long as you don't rain on anyone else's parade all the time and shut up once you've let of steam. The people I'm talking about don't do that. Sorry, but even if you don't like something, you don't have the right to hate on people who do like it.

.......MLP? >> Cadance?

*only guessing here*

There's this thing called 'scrolling past it'. Just because you see something related to a fandom you hate doesn't mean you need to focus on it, or splash your hate everywhere. I'm not saying that a person can't let off steam - but there is a difference between letting off steam and actively going out of your way to hate on a series/bash the fans/do pretty much any of what the OP mentioned.

Best PSA ever.

uh no, I'm in the same boat and as simple as "scroll past it" seems, it actually does work. I don't mind people saying they hate/dislike things, but when you get into "people who like things I don't like are dumb" territory with "it's popular so suck it up" as an excuse, then you're just a self-absorbed jackass.

Besides, encouraging fandom hate just causes you to think about that thing you hate all the time and then you can never really get over it. Then you'll become one of those people who gets laughed at for taking fandom too seriously, which results in even more nerd rage.

It's still annoying though and they don't have to do it. I don't like Homestuck, Hetalia, or BBC Sherlock. But I'm not bothered by people liking them and posting about them.
I follow people on Tumblr who talk endlessly about shows I don't watch/care for and games I don't play/care for, but they have other posts and topics I still follow for. Those are just the breaks. The fact that these people feel so sensitive about the shows they hate that *hearing fans talk* somehow feels like it's being shoved down their throats says to me that they need a thicker skin.
I get it if they have some kind of triggery reaction to something that avoiding it can be a huge priority and seeing it can be actually traumatic, but if you just sort of hate it then I don't have a lot of pity. If they post on fan comms for the subject instead of their personal journal or something, then I have absolutely no pity.

Yup, all of this.
