This. God, all they end up doing is taking up a chunk of fandom space and making it hostile. It's even worse when they make themselve so insular by avoiding fans who don't hate, old or new, that they convince themselves they're 'most' of fandom and that what they say is law. Move on, already, douches, it's only entertainment.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been through this, actually. There's one series that I used to love, but when it ended, I realized how awful it was and kind of started hating it. And this was all exacerbated by a bad experience with a fan. Now, I'm over it, but I will never enjoy that series again.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It's one thing to not like something, but splashing your hate for it all over the Internet and especially going to spaces where people are specifically talking about how they enjoy it to bitch incessantly, mock them or try to "prove" why they're wrong is just asshole behavior. Spamming people who like something with reasons you think it sucks isn't going to make them suddenly turn tail and agree with you; it's just going to piss them off and make you look like a dick.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't understand this myself at first but if you hate something that's kinda super popular (ie: Homestuck, Hetalia, Sherlock, Hunger Games) It's hard to avoid it where ever you go on the internet, and it feels like it's getting shoved down your throat. If you go on deviantart, the front page might have Homestuck / Hetalia crap. Your favorite artists might be drawing gratuitous amount of fanart for it, etc etc. You go on Tumblr? Someone you watch might fangirl or fanboy those series hardcore, but you don't want to tumblr savior them completely, and some Homestuck / Sherlock posts still might get through because they forgot to tag it or whatever.

Just let them let off some steam. You can just go "haha sucks to be you" and lul.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. That's not what this secret is about. This is about some new material from a fandom cropping up and fans already in the fandom deciding to make the place a hateful environment. There's nothing wrong with letting off steam once, so long as you don't rain on anyone else's parade all the time and shut up once you've let of steam. The people I'm talking about don't do that. Sorry, but even if you don't like something, you don't have the right to hate on people who do like it.

There's this thing called 'scrolling past it'. Just because you see something related to a fandom you hate doesn't mean you need to focus on it, or splash your hate everywhere. I'm not saying that a person can't let off steam - but there is a difference between letting off steam and actively going out of your way to hate on a series/bash the fans/do pretty much any of what the OP mentioned.

uh no, I'm in the same boat and as simple as "scroll past it" seems, it actually does work. I don't mind people saying they hate/dislike things, but when you get into "people who like things I don't like are dumb" territory with "it's popular so suck it up" as an excuse, then you're just a self-absorbed jackass.

Besides, encouraging fandom hate just causes you to think about that thing you hate all the time and then you can never really get over it. Then you'll become one of those people who gets laughed at for taking fandom too seriously, which results in even more nerd rage.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's still annoying though and they don't have to do it. I don't like Homestuck, Hetalia, or BBC Sherlock. But I'm not bothered by people liking them and posting about them.
I follow people on Tumblr who talk endlessly about shows I don't watch/care for and games I don't play/care for, but they have other posts and topics I still follow for. Those are just the breaks. The fact that these people feel so sensitive about the shows they hate that *hearing fans talk* somehow feels like it's being shoved down their throats says to me that they need a thicker skin.
I get it if they have some kind of triggery reaction to something that avoiding it can be a huge priority and seeing it can be actually traumatic, but if you just sort of hate it then I don't have a lot of pity. If they post on fan comms for the subject instead of their personal journal or something, then I have absolutely no pity.

haters are all silly silly people with lots of silly aggression.

[identity profile] fairyday.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Holy fuck, this. It should just be common sense. Criticism, a rant now and then? Sure, can't begrudge anyone that! But I can't begin to comprehend putting that much effort into something that you hate, nevermind knowing that all you're doing is upsetting people.

And I swear to god half the time the haters pay more attention than the fans just so they can analyse and point out every little thing that they hate. And twist everything around in the process, usually. It sounds so ridiculous I feel like I'm making this up, but I'm pretty sure we've all seen this. I just don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This. And what I hate even more is if people start hating so damn much the moment it is announced that something will be released. Then, when it is, they go and see/read/play/whatever it anyway and oh, god, they end up loving it after all. Fucking hypocrites.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, this. It's okay to not like something, but you really don't need to be a dick about it.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
When this happened to me, it was hard to keep a good frame of mind sometimes. Not because some people liked something I didn't, but because it was hard to see so much attention and excitement given to something I couldn't enjoy. I wanted to stay in the fandom, but it was tough to feel left out.

But some people seem to be fueled by hating stuff, which I don't understand. I think once something gets to a point where you can't avoid hating on it, it's usually a good time to get some distance. I don't enjoy getting annoyed by stuff I don't like.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Tough to feel left out? Try being one of the only few people actually looking forward to the new material and being in a fandom where those who hate it think they own the damn place.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Your fandoms are basically just like general video game fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
I assume you feel that makes it ok. Well, it doesn't. The fact that you're used to it and don't care =/= it being right.

You can't control your feelings but you can control your reaction to your feelings. That's what haters don't get, they act like they have no choice but to act miserable and make everyone else miserable, but it never occurs to them they could also choose the high road and get over it.

ME3 possible spoiler

I completely agree, and I try to hold myself to this standard in all things, no matter how much I hate the thing. I try to keep all my hate off of fan comms (preferably keeping it exclusively on my personal journal) and I do honestly try not to judge other people's tastes.
But goddamn if Mass Effect 3's ending won't be the thing that breaks me. (Still gonna try not to judge people who like it and gonna try not to target fan comms, but I am rather affronted by that ending and it is hard to keep inside.)

Is this about the Power Rangers fandom and how Samurai is being received by any chance?

P.S Why is my default icon showing when I try to select another one?

omg I love you for making this secret. I feel really weird and insecure because I love both the ritchie!verse holmes movies and bbc sherlock but I feel kind of like people in bbc sherlock fandom can be a dick about the movies. I mean I generally lurk in fandoms so I avoid any actual spouting of vitriol but damnit, I just want to be able to enjoy something without feeling like people are judging me because ~omg bbc sherlock is so much better!!!!!~
