If it's the second, then yeah, it's a little annoying when a fic starts out as one 'ship and changes to a different 'ship halfway through, especially if the author didn't mark it as such - and yes, a triad counts as a different ship from one of its component pairs. This is one of the reasons why I don't post unfinished fic - sometimes the characters decide to go someplace completely different in Act 3. But there's nothing stopping you from setting it down and just not reading it, OP.
