I love Merlin for the actors and the pretty and the very occasional moment of good writing, but the way the writers seem to have given up on characterisation is why I adore fanfic. I think, by wordcount, I've read more fic by fans who are more talented than the Merlin writers than the writers have produced scripts. There are brilliant portrayals of Gwen and Morgana out there if you look beyond the show itself.
