Well you must not like them very much either, if, you know, you want them to be written as completely different characters with the same names.

That would be one hell of a show. Though tbh I would have been happy if the show had just treated Gwen and Morgana better. And had not simply forgotten after the first season that those two are kick-ass women. I'm still pissed at Arthur's "Never knew you could fight" comment to Gwen in Lamia, because given the way the show has handled Gwen and Morgana you just know that it wasn't an 'Arthur is an idiot' comment, but an 'the writers are idiots' moment.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a show I would watch.

You know what would be great? Have you ever seen the Buffy episode The Zeppo? Xander goes around on his adventure and in the background there's Buffy and Angel being all dramatic and wacky. I would love the show you described, but in the background you always see Merlin and Arthur off on their own adventure, but we only get snippets of whats going on. Or maybe the show would switch back and forth - one episode would focus on the boys with the women in the background, then the next would switch it up.

so basically, you want a totally different show that has even less to do with Arthurian legends than actual Merlin?

I feel that Morgana really got the short stick in character development, that dark and edgier Merlin bores me, that Arthur can't decide between jerk and great king and that Gwen got ignored, used as a motivatio for Arthur and not allowed to be as fierce as in the first season alot. But! I remember all the awesome OT4 I read in this verse and have to say that I don't agree that the female charsare universally hated. I haven't checked for some time, I admit, but I think that from the fandom side many fans were upset about Morgana's character derail and her development, me included. We knew that she would become an antagonist, yes, we thought they would handle it alot more careful.

As much as I liked Merlin, this sounds like an infinitely better story. Maybe one day (when pigs fly) we'll get a show like this.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This would be an infinitely better show.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically you wish Merlin was a show that actually developed its characters, took care with continuity, wasn't aimed at an audience assumed to have the attention span of a gerbil, oh and also made said hopefully developed characters actually compelling. And handled by folk whose hands are not composed entirely of ham. Another show entirely.

Yeah, I got a ton of "man I wish this show would..."s too. The Morgana/Gwen friendship was something I REALLY wanted to see more of, and it irks me that it got shafted without much address. I do like the show for what is (light campy cartoony fun) but I'm not holding out for any depth. I just hunt for fic to hopefully satisfy that :(

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie, if the show had been about those two, I'd watch it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You're probably going to get hate for this comment, but I actually think it's an intriguing idea (maybe a spin-off series :P )

I think a lot of the hate for them comes from bad character development, although I quite like both of them. More in fic than in the show, tbh, but again, that goes back to how the writers dealt with their characterization (which is not well). I miss their S1 characters, when it was all about the OT4.

And omg, that scene where Merlin was a footstool. WTF. I can't even watch that scene. I hate it.

[identity profile] nombrehetomado.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I never watched Merlin, but that summary sounds intriguing, ngl.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've barely watched anything of this show, but I think I'd get more interested in it if it was like the above described one.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. God. Yes.

I like this show but I'm really not interested in Merlin, Arthur to their friendship as I feel I should be. But these two were way more interesting or at least they were to start with.

[identity profile] copperiisulfate.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
ngl i love the bromance but YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES.

and idk if i'm doing it wrong (nor do i care) but pretty sure the new season had me more invested in them than the dudes, so yeah.

but yes, haters to the left. merlin ladies are amazing and deserve so much better than they get.

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ever heard of The Mist of Avalon by Marion Bradley Zimmer ? It's a feminist version of the Arthurian myth w Morgana as the protagonist and Gwen as the other lead. Great book.

Sounds interesting. I'd watch it as another show. I like my Merlin as it is, glaring faults and all.

Also, this: massive hate-on the fandom has for its girls.

What did you expect? Morgana is an evil psycho. If they'd developed her character more I probably would have continued to like her, but they didn't and she became this mindless villain that pretty much irritates the hell out of me every time I watch her on-screen.

And Gwen. Yeah. The girl is so... ugh. Her wishy-washiness when it comes to guys is the least of her problems. She's just so conceited. She's a nice woman and everything, but definitely not a character I'd ever fall in love with it.

I liked Morgause, though, and kinda adored the whole Morgana/Morgause sistership going on there. Like everything else about the show, though, it was too underdeveloped and ended prematurely.

Considering what legend the series is based on, I didn't really expect for it to have any awesome female characters to begin with. Would have been nice, though.

ETA: I have to agree. The issue is entirely with the writers.

I think that Merlin, the way it is, could've had deep, engaging development if it'd been in the hands of stronger writers. The protagonists aren't the problem. But I agree that Morgana and Gwen as the main characters could've also been really interesting.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I would watch this show. I flounced from Merlin in series 2 around the time when Morgana was struggling with her powers and Gaius was like "NO! WE CAN'T HELP HER! BECAUSE OF... REASONS!!!!" Because. Ugh. That was some nonsensical shit.

I've never watched Merlin. It's on my list, but I haven't gotten around to it and nothing I've heard about it has inspired me to make it a priority. The show you just described, though?

Yeah, I'd be on that in a second. There's so little media that focuses on female friendships and power dynamics, especially when compared to all the "bromance" out there.

[identity profile] kuchren.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? if they'd just develop any of their characters, then we could potentially have this secret and the bromance all in one show.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
That would require considerably better acting than Katie is capable of. Sorry OP, then an actress for the part of Morgana should have been chosen for talent not just looks.
