That's why I like the romances in general. What I love about Cymbaline is that it keeps setting up situations from the tragedies (Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Titus Andronicus) and averting them at the last minute.

OP

Exactly! I have a list in my notebook of all the random ways it pulls from other plays, and just does weird as hell stuff with them, and I bet that was intentional- it was one of his later plays, so by the time he wrote it, it wasn't that he didn't know how to do half the things in the plays, he just didn't feel like it.

I haven't read that one yet (bad Shakespeare fan, I know), but I think now I need to.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
OP

It's ridiculously cheesy. Just don't expect anything serious, and it should be good. If you go in expecting a "serious" play, though, you'll be very disappointed. (Though they did make a movie, which was played seriously AFAIK, but I refuse to believe that that was the intent of the play.)

Okay I officially have to read this play because it sounds like pure epicness.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Just don't take it seriously and it is. It's like Shakespeare looked at all of his other works, and the themes from there (Macbeth's evil queen, Othello's jealousy, etc.) and was like "lol no, I've already did that shit. What can I do now...?"

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
OP, BTW, if that helps any. ^

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
So is it like, a big self-parody type thing made up of his Greatest Hits/Most Famous Tropes or something?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Yep.

That's how I see it, anyway. :D

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT IS.

I also call it his Demo Track sometimes - he's just throwing all his greatest hits and favorite plot devices together and has a ball with it. It's one of my favorites for just that reason.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Demo Track is also a good name for it, thanks anon! And, yeah, it's my favorite now for that reason as well! :3

You (and the OA above) would get more "I'm such an intellectual" points if you could spell the title of the play. Just sayin'.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Yeah, one of the things I don't like about the play is how hard it is for me to remember the spelling It's like Caribbean -vs- Carribean -vs- Carribbean to me. I know only one of them is correct, but I never can remember which one.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Who says they were asking for "I'm such an intellectual" points? It IS possible to genuinely enjoy old things without thinking it makes them cool. -_-

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Cymbeline is freaking awesome, yet NO ONE EVER READS IT. This should change.
