Well, there's a difference between finding them annoying/unlikable as characters vs as people. Sometimes characters are really annoying or unlikable people and actually show it without having enough positive traits to make up for it, (i.e., not the typical fridge logic brand of "wow I know this person is so cool and charming and enjoyable to watch but if you stop and think s/he's actually a giant dickwad" brand of unlikable.) But they can still be characters who can create interesting dynamics and carry a story well without the viewer going "oh god oh god shut up I don't even want to look at you guys anymore."

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia comes to mind...
