I don't think it's that weird. A good story with a good atmosphere can help you to get past bland or annoying characters. World building is especially important. Me, I liked Sailor Moon growing up but looking back on it now I can't stand half of the cast, especially the title character. Granted that's a bit different but not too much. Code Geass has a nifty story but there's a lot of characters and I don't think a lot of them got the proper development they should have had.
