I could see *some* people being upset about that more because they really, really like McCoy than because of how much they dislike Uhura, but that's still really, really uncomfortable. You could totally express wanting more McCoy without singling out Uhura to have screen time cut.

Also, I didn't really think McCoy was underrepresented or anything...

disclaimer: i could never stomach more than half a dozen episodes and one movie of tos, so these are all assumptions on my part, but -

i think they single out uhura because in tos, the main players were unquestionably kirk, spock and maybe only slightly bellow them (?) in importance, mccoy. everyone else was secondary.

in the reboot movie, there were three distinct tiers of importance: 1. kirk & spock as the protags; 2 mccoy and uhura as their plus ones/emotional support system; 3. everyone else.

so the logic behind the argument is that mccoy was brought down so uhura could be brought up, like in posters and such - http://trekmovie.com/2009/03/27/usa-poster-star-trek-poster-revealed/ - so there's this feeling of, "she's ~replacing bones!!1"

Also, I didn't really think McCoy was underrepresented or anything...

as someone who doesn't care one lick about mccoy (or uhura, to be completely honest, even though the fandom around reboot!mccoy mystifies me way more): mccoy was useless in reboot. if you erased all of his scenes after he got kirk aboard the enterprise, absolutely nothing of importance would be lost. if i gave a fuck about the character, i'd totally think they could have done better by him. but i could easily extend this to uhura, too.
