You know, in thinking about it further, this comment of yours starts an extremely bad precedence. You are assuming here that to find Uhura's behavior rude one must be a) a racist or b) misogynic, without any other viable alternatives. So basically you are saying that no one can find her abrasive, period, without being labeled as being derogatory. Um, no. Guess what, not everyone is going to like a character, and while I know full well that there is an evil side to humankind that still might judge others on their ethnicity and their gender, it would be a generalization to attribute that to ALL of humankind (or, in this case, all of Trek-kind).

With this thread it has become abundantly clear to me that those who favor the character do not want to hear from any dissenters, period, even if those dissenters have legit reasons for disliking a character that has nothing to do with ethnic background or gender. So basically what we're seeing here is reverse intolerance. i.e. because of some people may have exhibited ugly intolerance in the past, all Trek fans who dislike Uhura are then grouped into the same category. Or, to be more clear, you can't voice any concerns with her characterization without being shoved into a category of racist haters, even if you had no racist intent.

Kind of a double standard when it comes to tolerance, isn't it? What it comes down to is a unwillingness or a non-acceptance of anyone who would dislike the character for any reason at all, therefore you are being 'intolerant' of those who don't like her and labeling them with derogatory context. Because being called a racist *is* derogatory.

Everyone has characters they prefer over others. Everyone has can have characters they dislike because of their behavior (not their color, not their accent, not their gender... their BEHAVIOR) and guess what? That's okay. No one should be able to strong-handle or bully anyone else into agreeing with their preferences through the use of generalizing and name-calling. It's ridiculous. It's rude. Its obnoxious.

When I first commented in this thread, I was open to eventually liking her should the writers make her a little more... approachable and less abrasive in the next movie. I didn't hate her, I was just uncomfortable with her contemptuous attitude. Now though, I'm beginning to think her bahavior has nothing, was positively congenial in fact, compared to a portion of her fanbase here on fandom!secrets.

I'm going to assume you're a troll, because otherwise simply saying 'nope' as if you're some great authority without providing elaboration to your own perspective is rude and dismissive. Entitled much? Think your word is God simply because you said it, do you? You're not an authority on anything. You're a rude person who needs a lesson or two in manners.

Exactly what did I say that was racist. Elaborate? I said that Uhura was rude for calling Jim 'a mindless hick who only had sex with farm animals' and that I considered that behavior reprehensible, especially considering that he had only said he would buy her a drink and asked her for her name by that point. He did not touch her, he did not use derogatory language. I would disapprove of that name calling and show of elitism had Uhura been ANY ethnicity. Had she been a Caucasian character, I would still disapprove of those words. Did you miss the part in my very first post where I also stated that Kirk and Spock both also had jerk moments in the film?

Let it be noted that I have not once resulted to saying I hated her. I said I disapproved of her portrayal and I would like to see her more approachable and less condescending in the next film.

You know what I think? I think you don't like me pointing out negative behavior of your favorite character. You consider me harping on her, and that makes you angry, thus you call me a 'racist' to shut me up and make me feel bad for my point of view. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

I am not a racist. I am a minority myself. I get the effects of prejudice because its been done to me and I would never put anyone else through that. I treat everyone I meet with dignity and respect unless they gave me a reason to do otherwise. Can you say the same? I doubt it, because you haven't treated me with dignity and respect at all.

What I said before about treating people with dignity and respect unless they give me a reason otherwise? Well, you've given me a reason otherwise. GET OFF YOUR FUCKING HIGH HORSE. You have no leg to stand on. None. People are not going to like your favorite character. You need to come to terms with that. I suggest a psychologist because your issues are very apparent.

Also, before I was just kinda 'meh' at Uhura before, but now, I don't think I'll be able to look at her in the future without remembering how rabid her fanbase is, to the point that they result in name calling and petty, petty slandering. You've ruined her for me entirely. That is a shame. I wanted to like her because I loved her in TOS.
