Because it's Sherlock and Eames, and one of them is written as gay and (newly) single in the movie. 'Nuff said.

Well actually no, not enough said- I still find George Smiley and the rest of the Circus way more interesting than any of the younger generation being shipped together. Weird- the one fandom where I am geniunely more interested in character study and plot and mental maneuvering than shipping.

WORD. I mean, I see the angry heat of Peter/Ricki, but they definitely have chemistry too. (Lawd, everyone does. That was one of those marvelous books where I thought I was seeing sparks between two characters AND THEN IT WAS ACTUALLY TRUE)

(...and I understand Peter/anyone, really, because Benny is kind of the king of bromances. He hugs everyone!)

You really don't understand why? Well, let me see if I can break it down for you: it's two (arguably) attractive white guys under 45, just add any kind of tension that can be interpreted as sexual (reasonably or not) and there you have it.

Yes, I might have decided to go because I'm more familiar with actors like Cumberbatch or Hardy, but I left the theater with a thorough respect for all actors involved (makes me wanna read the book(s?) though) .....vs. one of my friends who slept through half the movie and could only remark on how beautiful cumberbatch looked in paisley.

The most interesting relationship for me is between Haydon & Prideaux tbh, especially with the subtext implied in the movie.

It has less to do with the characters and more to do with the actors playing them. Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch? Yes, please.

If there's one thing I've discovered in fandom it's that the antagonistic pairing is almost always more popular than the best friends. (See: Draco/Harry vs Ron/Harry, or Doctor/Master vs. Doctor/Jack. There are exceptions of course, but that's the usual.) Why this is will forever baffle me because rivalry pairings are an active DNW for me. (I don't know TTSS, but one guy beating the crap out of the other is so not a sign of "I love you" to me.) It makes me sometimes worry about the minds of the people who do enjoy that and what kind of relationships they must also enjoy, but mostly I just try not to think too much about it, as I suspect they don't either. Makes me sad though, definitely.

Meh, I can see why people would ship them in the book. The movie, not so much.

Because Gary Oldman is old. And no matter what the PUA crowd tells you, men are less attractive to young women (in general, of course, there are always those - both women and men - who prefer older lovers) as they age. Money goes a long way to closing the gap, but they can't get Gary Oldman's money by writing fanfiction about him ;p

That said, goddamnit, sometimes I wish it wasn't so. Smiley is by far the most interesting character in the film, and even in my own fandom one of the most compelling - and popular, outside of the slash crowd - characters is shut out of slash fic completely because he's similarly over 45. If you needed any more proof of the above statement, what little fic of him that does exist is "backstory" fic set 15-20 years ago, when he'd be young and tight and have more hair.

One million times this. I don't even care if he's shipped with anyone (Control? Hayden? Anne? idk & idc) or it's gen, I just want some George Smiley fic.

I don't know why this pairing is more popular than any pairing, really. I feel like there are a million other pairings more or just as shippable as these two that aren't written about. That turned me off of the fandom into 3.5 seconds.

Yup me, too. Tom Hardy's character was so MEH. And to be honest, I'm surprised there isn't more Haydon/Prideaux (the most obvious pairing).

I read the book first, and the idea never occurred to me. (But then Spoiler alert! in the book Peter's straight and Ricki's a complete twat. Tom's portrayal of Ricki is much nicer then Ricki deserves, frankly.)

But I totally agree with people who want more Bill/Jim. I know they're never 100% confimed as canon, but every single character in the book thinks they are.
