I know what you mean. My main reason is the zombie apocalypse though .Rule #1, cardio. I'm hoping for the slow "walking" dead, but if they happen to run, then I'm screwed.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, THIS.

This is why I started exercising. Not because I had to lose weight-- which I do-- but because if there was ever a zombie apocalypse I'd need to be in shape to run. I'm currently working on running and endurance, but I'm going to start weight lifting/upper body strength training to build up strength in my arms, chest, and back. Y'know, for climbing and hanging on to shit. >.<"

Omg, I'm such a freak.

BTW: God forbid there is ever a zombie apoc, I'm really hoping they're more "Shawn of the Dead" (lol) and less "28 Days Later".

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have no upper body strength. I'd want to wield a machete, but I guess I'll just be able to give the zombies a paper cut rather than chopping their heads off.

I also hope it's more Shawn of the Dead-ish. Or like in the Zombie Survival Guide. And god help us if there are special infected like in Left 4 Dead. I suck so hard at this game. Everytime one of those fuckers appears, they jump me. Even if I see them from miles away! Just... what am I doing wrong?!

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. I totally understand. This is sort of OT, but I've always had these dreams where I'm being attacked by someone but I'm too weak to fight back. Like, I'll try to punch them or something and it'd barely hit. So building enough strength to wield a weapon and actually afflict a mortal wound is something I find to be really important.

I hate zombies. I'm terrified of them. The only reason why I watch zombie-themed movies/series is because I want to learn survival tactics. I can't quite bring myself to play the games, though. I've tried playing several Resident Evil games (my sister collects them), but they scare me too much. LOL.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I had this awful realisation a while ago, when I was hanging out with some friends and we climbed a fence. Well, stonewall, more accurately. The guys had to basically pull/push us girls up all the way. Not only made this realise me how fucking weak I am (although I did better than some other guy) but also how fucking strong guys are. I weighed 85 kg at that time, how the hell did they pull me up?! That kind of makes me a bit uncomfortable. Also, I don't even have to try arm-wrestling. My 10 year old brother beats me.

Last time I played, I actually shrieked out loud xD It was a scary moment. But yeah, the survival tactics are a great thing. Although I do get discouraged sometimes, especially when the zombies are fast.

If you have an ipod touch or iphone, have you tried out the Zombies, Run app?

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes. I always feel physically weak (like, I can't even open a damn pickle jar, omg (in my defense, though, those things are seriously sealed tight!). And I don't even like thinking about how much stronger guys are. I was sort of assaulted a few years ago-- it was nothing too serious, thank goodness-- but that experience was a major eye-opener for me. Zombies apocalypses and etc aside (=p), I just don't like the idea of being vulnerable against an attacker. I don't want to look like China or anything, but I'd like enough strength to be able to punch someone and inflict damage (or, y'know, chop off a zombie's head with a machete).

I haven't played Resident Evil (or any zombie game) in years. Last time I tried, though, I remember actually screaming at one point because some zombie-animal-thingy started chasing me (fun fact: i hate being chased, even for fun). I got so freaked out it wasn't even funny. Haven't tried to play a game since.

And yeah, fast!zombies are really terrifying. Or one of those hug ass mutant-type ones that are super strong (like in the RE movies. I think there's also one in L4D?). Or zombie animals. *Shudders*

I have an iphone. And no, I haven't heard of it! I'll check it out, though (like, now).

ETA: Oh yeah, I'm going to be getting this. Talk about major motivation. Fare moreso than that Couch-to-5k app I used to use. I don't know why I'm surprised something like this is even out there.

Do you use the app yourself? If so, what's your experience with it?

Edited 2012-03-16 01:29 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can't do that either. But at least no water bottle is safe from me!
I'm sorry to hear that. I also had a bad experience. Nothing too severe, but enough to make me overthink my choices. And it just feels good to know that you could defend yourself. I had some self-defence training at school, and I did very well during the "attack scenario", which gave me a huge confidence boost.

God, that sounds terrifying! It happens in left 4 dead occasionally. There are these tanks that throw cars at you and stuff. I hate them I just run away blindly, hoping that my teammates will take care of the rest.

I have the app (for the ipod, so some functions were restricted) and I'm very happy with it. I think the story is really interesting and it definitely is a huge motivation. I'd definitely recommend it!

Well, there are two types of zombies: Sci-Fi Zombies, where people are resurrected or enraged by a virus, or Fantasy Zombies, wherein black magic or GOD SLAMMING SHUT THE GATES OF HEAVEN SO HELL IS OVERFLOWING AAAH is the cause. I would assume between the two, Option 1 is most likely, especially given that mankind is pretty dickish about chemical warfare. But if it's Option 2, you don't need to worry about your exercise regime so much. Because no matter what you do, we are all totally, totally screwed. :D

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
My main concern is zombie type 2 because I could actually imagine it happening. Mankind creating a virus that turns humans into zombie-like creatures? I find it too easy to believe, hence why I'm so terrified of it.

I don't really believe in magic-- that kind of magic, anyway-- so those zombies are barely a blip on my radar.

As for the third option...yeah. Not thinking about it.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
The original of that second trope, BTW, predates the Bible - in Babylonian mythology, at one point the goddess of the underworld's lover runs away (because he's a douche, not because of anything she did), and she marches up to the gates of the underworld and demands that the rest of the gods bring him back RIGHT NOW, or she'll just throw the gates open and let the dead out to eat the living. The gods, in fact, haul his ass back to her, so the threat of zombie apocalypse has been enough of a motivator to get stuff done since writing was invented.

I learned to do pullups because like hell I'm gonna be the screaming damsel in distress who the hero has to help up when she's dangling over the cliff or building or chopper or whatever.

OP: be sure to work on your sprinting, then. And add some jumping.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's a great idea. I ALWAYS think that when I watch scenes where somebody falls off a cliff and just barely managed to hold on and goes all "phew, thank god". What do you mean, "thank god"? This is the part where I hang around until I can't hold on anymore!

For that matter (vaguely related) all those people climbing up rope ladders to helicopters. We had such ladders in our gym and had to climb to the top. Well, I can proudly say that at least I managed that, but it's so difficult! And my hands cramped up from holding on so tightly, I barely got down again. In shows, everybody does it no problem, even five people at once! I honestly can't imagine how this would work irl for average people who don't climb rope ladders on a regular basis.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, one of the unfairnesses of life is that most men could probably do it without too much effort (stupid upper body strength) provided they kept halfway fit. But if you're a girl and want to be able to climb stuff well, yeah, you're probably gonna have to really earn it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT I was excellent at climbing when I was younger (like 12-15) mainly because I weighed next to nothing, so I didn't need a whole lot of strength to be able to easily haul my skinny ass up a rock face. I'd probably have slightly more trouble with it now though.
ext_74116: (Default)

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep working at it and you can get better.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Movies (and such) where the characters are capable of climbing their way out of trouble never fails to bum me out because I know that if I were in their position I'd likely fall to my death. I can currently do maybe one half-arsed pull-up atm, but I'm going to seriously be making an effort to remedy that.

I don't ever want to be in a situation where I'm hanging onto something and can't lift my way up to safety. Those damsels in the movies/books/etc are lucky-- they usually have a strong guy around to save their assess. I reckon most people who find themselves in such trouble aren't that fortunate.

Plus, being a damsel in distress? SO unappealing. Ugh.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Once you learn to do one pullup, the others come pretty easy. Kipping (using your whole body's momentum to pull yourself up) may be frowned on by old school bodybuilders, but crossfit folk and dangling-off-of-a-ledge folk agree that it's getting up the bar that counts.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I've thought about that too and I've come to the conclusion that if there ever was a zombie apocalypse I would probably just go ahead and commit suicide. because I'm a huge wuss.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to think this way, too. I know for a fact that if I were about to get eaten I'd blow my out brains first. And I'm CATHOLIC. So suicide, to me, is a major no-no. That says something, I think.

Have you heard of Run For Your Life? It's a 5K run where you try to avoid zombies and tackle obstacles.

I have! Sadly, I don't live in America, because if I did, I'd be there. It sounds so incredibly awesome.
