I know what you mean. My main reason is the zombie apocalypse though .Rule #1, cardio. I'm hoping for the slow "walking" dead, but if they happen to run, then I'm screwed.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, THIS.

This is why I started exercising. Not because I had to lose weight-- which I do-- but because if there was ever a zombie apocalypse I'd need to be in shape to run. I'm currently working on running and endurance, but I'm going to start weight lifting/upper body strength training to build up strength in my arms, chest, and back. Y'know, for climbing and hanging on to shit. >.<"

Omg, I'm such a freak.

BTW: God forbid there is ever a zombie apoc, I'm really hoping they're more "Shawn of the Dead" (lol) and less "28 Days Later".

yeah, I've thought about that too and I've come to the conclusion that if there ever was a zombie apocalypse I would probably just go ahead and commit suicide. because I'm a huge wuss.

Zombiefit is an actual THING, they post workouts on the internet.

Have you heard of Run For Your Life? It's a 5K run where you try to avoid zombies and tackle obstacles.

Don't worry about it, OP. You're not alone.

I initially began wanting to work out because of the manga Basara (there was a very Hunger Games/Battle Royale arc in the series), but I actually started working about because I was terrified of being out of shape if there was some kind of zombie epidemic. It doesn't end there, of course. I want to keep in shape just in case there's a general apocalypse, a terrorist attack, an alien/etc invasion, if I ever find myself in some kind of "fight for survival" scenario (hunger games, battle royale, basara, etc), if I ever have to run from a rapist/murderer/kidnapper, WWIII, and so on and so forth.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone should run or do some form of cardio! Whatever reason you have can only be good. RUNNING IS AWESOME. I only have three reasons that keep me running though tbh.

1) What if shit gets dangerous? Zombies. Serial killers. Coyotes. That last one is actually pretty realistic where I live. Fuck if I'm going to be a meal/victim.

2) Ass. Excellent ass muscles. Reaching around to grope myself, and finding a set of healthy cheeks is like a good dose of anti-panic attack. *squeeze* And already I'm back to reality.

3) What if I want to be a private eye/vigilante one day? I want to know I can actually catch some criminals and suspects. Or at least have more endurance than one.

Dude, I got my ass in shape two years ago because I saw "Prince of Persia" and wanted to be able to do parkour.

...I still can't do parkour, but I lost a bunch of weight and can actually run a mile, gotta count for something, right?

Best of luck!!

@ Secret 1 - I totally get you.... I have health conditions that means I can't run or keep up.... I hope that The Doctor has the tech of Marty McFly and gives me a hover board. As for Sherlock... well.... we will see

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, man, whatever works! Good for you! (I'd probably pretend I was training for the Hunger Games. Except I'm too lazy and would die in the first 10 minutes anyway, so eh.)

I know people will think I'm strolling or being a dick but I work out because I don't want to be like my obese fandom friends.

I'm a transgender male and I'll be starting hormones soon so I have to work out regularly and get back into shape (I gained weight through depression) and honestly, this is what motivates me to do better, I think it's awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
OT but would you all rather get a treadmill or an elliptical? I would run outside but I don't want to look like a fool who stops like every 30 seconds just to catch my breath lol. Gotta build the stamina first.

Saying this as someone who has a really monster relative who just goes on about how A) everyone who doesn't have a magazine-cover-model body is "fat" and B) unless you do everything her way, you are just lazy and have no excuses, your reasons to want to work out are perfectly fine. Outside of health concerns, then the reasons you have to not work out/work out--whatever they are--don't matter. If you are happy with them, then that's 100% of your target group that is happy with your reasons.

So, if you're training to run with the Doctor, that's great. So long as you are happy with it. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I started a community (http://eat-play-geek.dreamwidth.org/profile) for fitness and weight-loss based on things like this secret. Because most of the reasons I exercise are totally geeky reasons like zombie apocalypse, needing to run with the Doctor, Ninja attack.....and many more my imagination comes up with. Nobody is in the comm but me, basically, and I never post...but still, back in the day I thought it'd be awesome of all of us nerds got together to encourage each other in our nerdly exercising. So...I guess this reply is just a rambling way to say you are so not alone, OP.

[identity profile] 100101011.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
that's such a cool reason. zombie apocalypse, too. i've tried to work out for SO many different reasons, even the ever noble one of being healthy. and i DO want to be healthy, definitely. but in the end, the only thing that really gets my ass to the gym and the sweat flying is wanting to be hot. it's so pathetic lol

I understand, OP. Don't feel bad.
I recently joined a kick-boxing class and started eating a lot better, because I want to be healthy/fit/learn how to fight like Tintin! (I'm also cosplaying as Captain Haddock with my sister so!)

To everyone in this tread who's struggling with their running, you should try this program. it's pretty neat: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Beautiful. I think I'll borrow your motivation!

[identity profile] were-lemur.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Imaginary Daleks are great motivation on a stairstepper. I'm just sayin'.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Just to put this out there, on the oddball consulting detective front, as well as doing the gym bunny thing so you can run; you might want to grab a copy of this http://uk.ebid.net/for-sale/bl-princess-workshop-manual-60760085.htm?from=googleshop_uk It could come in really handy.

You don't get to pick your oddball, they pick you after all. Oh and keep a towel on you at all times!!

Funnily enough, I was exercising today and put The Waters of Mars on to entertain myself.
Turns out that that's pretty good motivation, OP.
